Replace car tyre

The service record last year states that the rear tyres are starting to perish outer side walls.

I am guessing it will be cheaper to get new tyres fitted at a tyre place than to pay the garage to replace the tyres in the next service?

We do 1500 miles a year, so wonder if we will need to replace the back tyres to pass the MOT coming up next month.

Random web search for your stated car but not specific model indicates likely tyre size of 205x60x16.
Start the tyre ball rolling by checking comparison site at
    tyrecomp.co.uk/car…htm (corrected)
    or a more marketing-based
    blackcircles.com/tyr…-16
and ensure "with fitting" is selected.

But probably best to amble over to your car, bend down and look at the markings on the semi-perished sidewall.
Any markings hard-wearing enough to withstand the stated sustained kerb-bashing will state the actual size and manufacturer and type. You can then choose to re-run the searches to match the existing size + manufacturer, or not. (edited)

With you making the decision on when to replace tyres with timelines of when its due a service or if an MOT will fail it and not 'I just checked it and it looks like x'

You're probably best taking it right away to a tyre shop and ensuring its not a danger to yourself and more importantly others. There shouldn't even be a discussion on if it'll pass/scrape through an MOT, tyres with deterioration can blow. Nobody here can advise you on what will pass or not but if you have that doubt now in your head why are you still driving it and not got it checked out?

i am wondering if there is a general consensus as to where is the best place to get replacement tyres. if there isn't much difference to getting them from the garage, then the garage would be the easier option.

the tyres aren't dangerous as they wouldn't have passed the MOT if they were and we haven't used the car much since last february when the MOT was done.

If they're starting to perish I'd get them done ASAP, your safety and others is priority. If you do 1500 miles a year I'm guess it's around the doors, so you don't have to go all out and buy some fancy ones, just basic will do you

Get the mot.... the service people are likely as not trying to upsell you.
The mot guy will pass it, fail it or issue an advisory....either way you'll have a few days to get em swapped if needed.

wasn't sure if there is a general rule about the best place to get tyres replaced so if the garage says the tyres don't pass the MOT, i can just tell them to replace the tyres for me or to take it back and go and get new tyres. i am guessing you can get new tyres fitted on the same day at tyre centres?

As stated (several times) above just call the garage and ask, nobody else can tell you what your garage will say.

I was just in exactly the same boat, I looked into various online offers posted here and other services (halfords etc) then asked the garage for their price, they told me, it was cheaper than all the above so I requested prior to the service/MOT to include those to be done at the same time, to ensure they had stock. job done. Not much point in having a car

I just phone the garage and get the price of tyres (before the MoT) then check out black circles etc and decide from there.

OP - I know an excellent tyre place close to Junction 7 for the M25 on the A23 as I know you are in the Surrey area.

Only thing between you and the road are tyres , I’d say they are the most important part of the car , I would have had them replaced as soon as it came up .

Service record is just an advisory. If the MOT tester says they are fine then they are fine - you only do a small amount of mileage per year so so like they will wear out a lot.
