This seller must be killing it with the discount deal. Loads of phone deals going.

I got the base 64gb steam deck, +256gb internal HDD replacement and a 1tb for less than the price of the 512.

    Base steam deck £350
    Upgraded HDD was £18
    1tb Amazon u3 card was £91.

I'm not sure if the 512gb model is worth it for the screen.

But if you aren't up for tinkering the device then the price in the OP is really good. (edited)

The screen is actually worse if you're not playing in a bright room as the colours are mute due to the coating.

Not that I’ve looked into this at all in the slightest, but my understanding was that these were only available direct from Valve and potentially on backorder?

No they're in stock all the time now, but this is cheaper than Valve charge using the code.

Wouldn't buy this from anyone but Valve tbh.

If you can find someone with a work rewards thing you can get 10% off currys vouchers, so buy £550 of currys vouchers (for ~£500) and then buy £550 of steam gift cards from their website and you can save a bit of money

Likewise you can always buy the 64gb model for less, and it's possible to upgrade the ssd to 512gb anyway, or just use it with an SD card.

Valve customer service has been amazing from what I've seen its worth buying direct. I was unable to get the currys discount myself for mine but I bought by selling tf2 loot box keys on the community market reducing the total steam deck cost by 25% even after fees. Then bought installed a 1TB ssd for £80 which was not that much work at all

Very happy with my £350 model + SD Card, having a blast revisiting so many older titles.

Can get 512gb ssd from eBay for about £50 installation is easy peasy totally worth it

Seems like a good price for the 512gb if you don't want to upgrade the base model yourself or if you need the matt screen coating.

I upgraded my base model with a 512gb SSD and 512gb Micro SD I got for £40 each, so was £430 in total for 1TB of storage.

We have two decks in my house. I tend to use mine for indie games and the main pc for FPS and mouse games. Excellent device.

Great device, I upgraded the 64GB version immediately but to be honest with a decent SD card in it you won't be looking at a stopwatch wondering how long stuff takes to load. (edited)

Interested in getting a Steam deck for my daughters birthday .

Why are people upgrading if you can just put a high speed SD card in it? Is the SD card just for storage .. i.e you have to transfer games back and forward onto the SSD to play them?

The 64GB model uses the slower MMC format for storage, rather than SSD. I’m sure others will be able to chime in with more technical details. It’s basically upgrading the base model to be on a par specs-wise with the storage media of the other models without having to pay as much. Valve have stated they do not recommend carrying out this mod and it may void any warranty.

To answer your question, no, games run off both the SD card and the internal storage. The main drawback of the 64GB model is that it won’t hold many games at all. The OS takes up space - you may get one mid-size game, or a few smaller games on it. You absolutely need an SD card for the base model.

If you can get a deal on an SD card (512GB cards often go on sale for £33-35), then the 64GB is not a bad option. (edited)
