sorted byI got the base 64gb steam deck, +256gb internal HDD replacement and a 1tb for less than the price of the 512.
Base steam deck £350
Upgraded HDD was £18
1tb Amazon u3 card was £91.
I'm not sure if the 512gb model is worth it for the screen.
But if you aren't up for tinkering the device then the price in the OP is really good. (edited)
If you can find someone with a work rewards thing you can get 10% off currys vouchers, so buy £550 of currys vouchers (for ~£500) and then buy £550 of steam gift cards from their website and you can save a bit of money
Likewise you can always buy the 64gb model for less, and it's possible to upgrade the ssd to 512gb anyway, or just use it with an SD card.
I upgraded my base model with a 512gb SSD and 512gb Micro SD I got for £40 each, so was £430 in total for 1TB of storage.
Why are people upgrading if you can just put a high speed SD card in it? Is the SD card just for storage .. i.e you have to transfer games back and forward onto the SSD to play them?
To answer your question, no, games run off both the SD card and the internal storage. The main drawback of the 64GB model is that it won’t hold many games at all. The OS takes up space - you may get one mid-size game, or a few smaller games on it. You absolutely need an SD card for the base model.
If you can get a deal on an SD card (512GB cards often go on sale for £33-35), then the 64GB is not a bad option. (edited)
