Getting back into mountain biking for the first time in about 15 years and not sure the difference in wheel size needed (27.5 or 29inch). Any help would be great.

I have 29" and 27.5" mountain bikes, I prefer the 29". The bigger wheels roll better, better over roots and rocks etc. The 27 5 turns better. I prefer riding the 29", in most cases its the faster bike. I would say a 29" would be better for getting back into mountain biking, more forgiving on the trail.

Is the VRS model a better buy at £100 more?

I’m no expert and was just seeing if the extra worth it for reasonably light use.

    Thanks

I would say so. I got the VRS 29er and spent two days throwing it down the reds at BPW which was awesome fun. I am 18 stone as well, but bike was absolutely mint.

Gutted these aren't available via my employers cycle2work scheme. Stuck with halfords and tredz offerings

You arent just stuck with Halford and Tredz though. You can get your cycle2work voucher converted to be accepted by many other bike stores. I ordered bikes from Balfes Bikes with cycle2work voucher and they have a large selection of big brands. All you need to do is find a bike you like and contact the company to see if they will take cycle2work vouchers. They will either say 1) no 2) yes, but they will charge a fee to convert the voucher 3) they will take the voucher without charge.
Balfes didnt charge me and dealt with halfords directly to convert the voucher.

Yeah I think that's well worth the extra personally. Both are good buys!

That gearing will be hell for a beginner with small wheels. A very odd choice to stick a 1x8 setup on.

The fork is actually a very good one if you are prepared to do the upgrade to oil and then look after it.

The best cheap upgrade you can do is buy some tubeless valves and sealant at the same time.

Same. Even their reps don't know that date, or at least won't give one. Frustrating as my scheme ends in March.

Does anyone have an opinion over whether it would be worth the extra £300 for the On-One Scandal that's been posted over the VRS?
    Kostas_L's avatar
    Kostas_L
the on-one has a better fork and it has a slacker modern geometry, if you are looking for a mtb that doesnt need any upgrades I would go for on-one

Nice bike but if you can afford it go for the Vitus Nucleus 27 VRS at £100 more, 10 speed and better Shimano components.

Been this price for ages, picked up a VItus Nucleus 26 for my son last week, seems great. The VRS is well worth the extra, I was toying with it but decided on a Fuji Nevada 1.7 SRAM instead, which is currently on offer for 320 on Wiggle, couldn't justify 500 quid on a bike for occasional riding.

Very good but are heavy - I have one plus a carbon bike - if you can afford a carbon one get one as they are way better - you can get low end carbon ones now for about double this

Vitus are brilliant modern geometry mtbs! It’s at the low end. And yes the forks will be dire. But that’s a decent bike. For not a lot of money

Medium frame...what height would that (typically) work for. My son is growing fast and I want to make sure we get something he can ride now but that he will be able to at least keep going for a couple of years.

I've been looking for a budget hybrid bike for quite some time. There are several in the market, but I know nothing about bikes. So, don't want to end up wasting my money. I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone could recommend a good bike that's less than £500 and is good enough to work for a few years.

Would this bike make a decent bike for using on the road with slicker tyres,I only use my old bike to go a few miles at the mot to go to shops and I use canal paths sometimes too,I was just wondering if the frame geometry would suit that,The price point suits me so I don't want to be spending more than this so this may well be a good option
    weiran's avatar
    weiran
Geometry won’t matter riding down a canal path, you can get slicker tyres but it’s not required. Even though this is a cheap bike it looks expensive so I’d worry it would be targeted by thieves if you’re leaving it outside.

This is a bargain! If you can go for the extra £100 though then you should as the wheels on the VRS come with thru axles which means it's a lot easier to upgrade the forks as boost forks are the standard now. Also quick release is not great.

The VRS has a QR rear axle doesn't it? Same as the Bizango non-Pro. (edited)

Good bikes, both my kids have one.
Worth mentioning not to panic buy. As much as it is a good deal, both the VR and VRS have been at their respective sale price for ages now. (edited)

If you're at the end of supposedly fitting both frame sizes, e.g 5ft6 being at the upper end of S and bottom end of M. Are you normally better off going for the bigger or smaller option?
    spike000009's avatar
    spike000009
A smaller bike gives you more control and a larger one more speed, people tend to go smaller for mountain bikes as it makes them easier to manoeuvre on a trail. I am between small and medium but have found small bikes uncomfortable so stick to medium, some brands mediums are a little smaller if you can find them. I have a medium kona (it's a smaller medium) and this bike in a medium, which a a little larger but in find it very comfortable. All that said I am 5ft 7 and a half, so you may be better with a small. Not very helpful I know and I researched for ages before buying. If you can sit on one that's your best bet. I went to halfords and sat on few of their s and m which helped a bit even just to rule out their bikes

Also would this or the VRS be much of an upgrade on the Voodoo Bantu from a few years ago. Think they were 350 when bought but prices have risen since in general. Don't know too much about bikes so wondering if these specs are similar better or worse?

I'd be grateful for some assistance here, please. From what I gather, this is a stonking deal and I was going to purchase via my employer's cycle2work scheme but to my great disappointment, chainreaction cycles isn't on the list of retailers!

I am not very savvy with bikes and was wondering if those who are knowledgeable on it know of any alternatives at Halfords, Tredz, and others that are as good at this Vitus and around the same price or say £100 more, please?

How does this compare the with Trek Marlin 6, for example: trekbikes.com/gb/…ght

Any assistance is greatly appreciated. (edited)

Try searching best mountain bike under 4,5 or £750, bike radar give good results. I've got a vitus with box gears and it's great apart from the gears, the one with shimano would be better. I've also got a kona from cycle to work through cycle solutions which was a good experience, they have loads of choice and good sales.

If you are after something nice to go on some family rides then you can't go wrong. The Clarkes breaks are garbage though.
