As the wonderful Dolly Parton said: "It costs a lot of money to look this cheap". And she's right, buying make-up isn't easy on the pocket.

So we've done the glamorous job of scouring our local pound shops looking for branded beauty bargains. Some are discontinued (they were the hottest trends once, so we think anyway) and others are still in the shops with a big price tag.

Poundworld

- Stila sheer colour tinted moisturiser 50ml - £21 elsewhere online
- Boholash, Salonsystem diamond false lashes - £7.99 elsewhere online
- Elegant Touch Union Jack nails - £6.45 at Boots
- OPI nail shatter 15ml - RRP £13, but we've seen them for £4.49 delivered
- Miss Eylure false eyelashes - £4.09 at Superdrug
- NYC false lashes - £2.99 at Superdrug
- Rimmel Wake Me Up mousse - £5 at Tesco
- Rimmel Glam Eyes trio - £4.99 (incl delivery) elsewhere online
- TOWIE false eyelashes - £13 for a 3-pack elsewhere online, so about £4 each
- Calvin Klein sheer creme eyeshadow - RRP £1.50, but we saw it for £5 elsewhere online
- Rimmel 60 seconds nail polish - was £3.70 at Tesco, now £2.70

This is what we found in our local stores. Speaking to Poundland and Poundworld, they say you can get these items in most stores, while stocks last.

Usually "brand name" beauty products in discount stores are discontinued or old product. Sometimes both.

I personally only buy from official stockists of the products, not stores like pound land that have got x amount of stock for a limited time.

Good work, have some heat!

Heat added. I don't buy from official stockists, cannot afford there prices.much prefer to spent a pound on an item and not feel guilty if I don't like it.

How much are these??

I always buy make up at poundland , heat added

Ha the word poundland and beauty aren't things you normally hear in the same sentence. Most of the women in there are gorgeous though, I love the way the Tracksuit hangs over the rolls of gut. I find the tattoos done with a broken glass bottle oh so attractive. Last but not least missing teeth are a real turn on for today's modern man.

Voted hot BTW.

So your more than willing to fork out a heck of a lot more for the same product if its from an official stockist?? Madness me thinks or the word snob springs to mind! oO

Heat added. They also sometimes have products which are still current but have recently had packaging changes (so not necessarily really old stock) - got one of the most popular Rimmel lipglosses that way before. They also have Revlon and Sally Hansen nail polishes quite often

I worked in cosmetics and skin care for 3+ years and whenever I have come across products at a much discounted price they have always been old, discontinued or generally not in the best condition, I would rather pay full price for something I know is good quality vs something that could be quite old.

I don't use any of the brands listed above but that doesn't make me a snob, neither does spending a little bit more to ensure I have something that's in date and in good condition.

And this is all just from my own personal experience, I don't judge people for buying make up from pound land, I just stated that I don't do it - I like to give a reason when I vote cold.

The false eyelashes cant go off so heat added.

Could you not have said all that initially then?????

Still a top notch quality find

Shame they never have organic make up. I pay a lot for that stuff but I'd rather not cover my face in ones filled with chemicals linked to cancer and things.

I got a lot of Rimmel, Sally Hansen and Maybelline Nail varnish/lipsticks/eyeshadows yesterday - a lot of the Sally Hansen nail varnishes had 2 in the packet - heat added

As much make up done on face = that much lies required to chase. In the nature none of the female animals are more beauty and attractive than male ones as much as I have seen. So keep yourself pure and natural ladies if you want to hear the words in the same aspect..

And thumbs up for Dolly Parton and Poundland

Good deal, as far as I am aware the shelf life of make up begins once it is opened. If the packaging is all intact and sealed I don't see a problem! Bargain!

I think it can vary. I bought some "Limited Edition" Revlon varnishes that I found on a beauty blog when I got home; they'd been released that summer (bought them in winter) which isn't bad.

The "Poundland makeup is ancient" assumption seems to come from the Watchdog piece about their acquiring of Stila makeup and Stila being up in arms. The trademark on some of the items was quite a few years back (2006 on the item I have), but that doesn't mean the makeup is quite that old..just the year of rebranding.

I would maybe think twice about the Stila tinted moisturiser but I only bought their face powder anyway. Every cosmetic item I've bought out of Poundland has been problem-free, and I buy a LOT of makeup, not just from there.

If we were to go by the assumption that everything in Poundland is old and not in the greatest quality, that would apply to their toiletries, medicines, foodstuffs, etc? You find their food usually has generous BBE dates on them too. In many discount shops the majority of stock is shortdated; Poundland is an exception.

This is scorching hot! spent more than I should have. managed to collect a good collection of concealers and face powders which usually cost a fortune elsewhere. Good colour range for Maybelline MNY New York range nail polish - couldn't say no to sparkly black, dark purple and french manicure - probably not what's in fashion, but for £1 each just bought what I'd usually get. Thank you! Love a real bargain and don't care if it's in date or not - it was properly sealed products unlike the opened make-up at some places where you're expected to pay 5 to 10 times that price.
