Found 18th Oct 2007
Please be gentle, this is my first deal that I've posted.

Got this for my son and am well pleased. Retail price for each book is £9.99 (or £99.90 for a set of 10 books), so you save £89.91!!!

Description:
Gaul, you might well remember, was divided into three parts. No, four parts - for one small village of indomitable Gauls still held out against the Roman invaders. This brilliant series has a sales record that outstrips even J.K. Rowling. The very first album was published in 1961 and the books have continued to delight adults and children in equal measure. In this introductory collection join Asterix and Obelix as they become gladiators, rescue Getafix (again), and demonstrate their resistance by going on a journey around the entire country. Each book comes with more visual and verbal jokes than you can shake a stick at!

Set titles and authors :
Asterix and the Secret Weapon
Asterix The Gaul
Asterix The Gladiator
Asterix and Obelix All At Sea
Asterix and the Banquet
Asterix and the Magic Carpet
Asterix and The Actress
Asterix In Britain
Asterix and the Goths

There comic format got them a few weeks ago

I ordered these a couple of days before this thread started and was convinced I'd already seen it mentioned so didn't bother posting. Looking at the heat it's getting I wish I had! Voted hot anyway - I have to really when I've bought it, don't I?

Good post OP, obviously you're not as dense as me!:prop:

Yeah it was mentioned in another thebookpeople thread from 23/09/07 but definitely deserves its own thread! I ordered a couple of sets back then and am keeping one for my kids and splitting the other one for Christmas presents!

Great deal, ordered thanks.

Over £5 postage, as from the North of Ireland

Thanks for the reply. I shall now order them as I was only interested for the comic ones. They are more fun and even though I am an adult with kids, I still enjoy them.
Regards,
Saabu.

Stick the kids - I LOVE Asterix!!! Voted Hot!

I love the Book People - they always have fantastic offers like this.

From the few English ones I've read, I'd agree that he did a great job. The thing is that so much of the text is play on word (jeux de mots) that it can't be translated directly or you'd loose too much. From those I read, the translator did a great job rewriting the humour to fit the English language but I grew up reading them in French and that not quite the same :-( Plus I am trying to teach French to my sons so I need more French books, I've got truck load of English ones filling the study, the bedroom, the lounge... quite a few of them due to living too close to Galloway & Porter and their warehouse sales for too long.

Back to Asterix, for example, in Asterix in Britain, in the original, all the natives finish their sentences with ", n'est-il pas." that simply can't be translated to English cause no one would notice anything odd with ending sentence with ", isn't it."

So thanks to your great uncle fo promoting this jewel of literature that is Asterix in the English language. Yes, this is literature. When I was at University in Quebec City, I knew a girl whose master thesis subject was Asterix Le Gaulois.

Get them, they're worth it. While you're at it, try to find some Gotlib too.

Order has been placed .. thanks for a good find :-)

Thanks very much!!
