Used the free mot offer last year from Halfords, passed with no issues.

I always use these cheap MOT deals, be it Halfords, Kwik Fit, F1 Autocentres, whatever. Never had any fails that weren't justified and I drive exclusively old French cars. But then I know what I'm doing with cars and maintain them properly.

It's like the old quote often attributed to Gary Player - 'People say I'm lucky. Well the more I practice, the luckier I get'

The better I maintain my cars the less I get 'ripped off' at MOT time.

Don't forget to add £500 to cover fitting a totally unnecessary new exhaust and brakes, making it £510 for a MOT.
Used this last month and passed my car no issues. I am sure they would be shut down if they were seen to be exploiting customers.

Wouldn't do it even if it was free. Sorry, cold.

Hundreds of threads about cheap MOTs, basically, if you think you are getting a bargain, you aren't, the garage will find absolutely anything to fail your car on. You will then end up getting bent over by said garage for unnecessary repairs.

Standard mantra applies, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Known as loss leaders so they need to make it up elsewhere!
This company is dire, use at you peril

Afraid I agree with others, avoid....
I would avoid it unless you got fairly new car.
I used a free MOT offer, my car failed on many many faults I was quoted hundreds of pounds to get it fixed, I declined and on the way home called in at my local garage who fitted me in, it passed.

Likewise. My Mot is good for another 6 months but I'll make use of this deal if I buy anything from Halfords. The last time I used it in conjunction with an O2 free screenwash from Halfords offer so the MOT cost nothing and also found no issues.

Exactly
Guaranteed MOT failure. I know someone who manages one.
Just had this email and was going to post it (beaten to it as always!) I used the free MOT that was last year and cost me nothing more than a 49p item. Car passed no problem so please don't think it is a scam... it really isn't. If your car fails... its because it has a fault and no other reason.
Used the free MOT last time and the staff were helpful, cars of a age where I thought they would find work but went through without issue. I'd use them again
Halfords
Went to Halfords few months age, after avoiding them for years to buy windscreen wipers.
I was told that they need to check if I’m actually buying a right one! Guy went with me to the car and “laid” on the bonnet to reach to wipers.
Never been so tempted to punch someone.

I, too, used the free MOT on two cars. I was sceptical, but they both passed. I'd use them again.
It will cost you a lot more than £10 by the time you drive out.

Since 2015 i did mot with national tyres and not majors. One year (last year) i did with Halfords and got two majors. Have to spend £250 to fix it.
Offside Front Suspension arm ball joint dust cover excessively deteriorated so that it no longer prevents the ingress of dirt (2.4.G.2)
Nearside Front Front wheel bearing has excessive play (2.5.A.3c)
it actually amazes me how people fund companies like this

What is strange about that? You know parts in the car get used right? If in 2015 they were in good condition, in 2016 they were in good condition, in 2017 they were in good condition, it doesn't mean than in 2018 they will also be in good condition. Many factors here in play such as age, miles driven, roads where the car was driven, etc etc.
By no means I am trying to defend Halford, never used them for mot, but it's a little silly to think that if they find two perishable parts after at least 3 years (and however many more) of being used, they do it on purpose. They might, but it's likely that parts just needed replacing (or could be given as advisories, but still would have to be replaced soon).

Yep, cheap MOT but unfortunately the things you need to get put right before tour car passes will cost a lot more than a tenner, they rely on gullible fools.

Well that is strange as my Brother took his car there for an MOT, it failed due to needing new seat belts all round, having said that, the car was 5 years old and the cost to replace was only £500 lol, needless to say he took it somewhere else and it passed.
Got a bike from halfords and it doesn't seem like its built properly... not sure where I can take it to see? But I think they are clueless... overpriced stuff and old people are keeping them alive.

I am no expert in this. All I am saying is , it’s possible that they exaggerating or making up issues. Used national tyres again this year and again no majors. May be they are right, may be not. It certainly created a doubt for me.

Thanks for the story, is the morale train as a mechanic if you don't want to be ripped off
Ok for a pre MOT inspection.

Guaranteed MOT failure. I know someone who manages one.

You mean apart from all the people who take their cars there and they pass? So not really guaranteed failure is it?
Awful company they put an advisory on my car, BMW, because it had a engine cover and they couldn’t inspect the engine. It was the standard manufacturer cover!

I don't see the problem here. They couldn't check it and its to cover the guys back. Same on the undertray.
Standard practice and as long as they didn't find unnecessary work then that comment is unjustified.

Nope, I'm not a mechanic.

I reckon the people who complain the most about getting 'ripped off' at MOTs are people who don't so much as open the bonnet on their car from one year to the next and only spend any money on maintenance when they either get an MOT failure or break down. Hardly surprising.

If you want to take your car to Halfords, where staff and managers are driven and targeted to cross-sell additional parts regardless of need, then fill your boots. 'Boring' or otherwise -based on my direct experience, and that of family members, I would not, and I will carry on warning others about this dreadful company when they blatantly try to advertise on this forum.

So the MOT tester dd his job properly and you didn't like it?
If there are undertrays, then they can't inspect what they cover. You could take the undertray off, find something that could be a failure, complain to VOSA and have the tester lose his license if he didn't mention it as an advisory.
The VOSA system has this as a drop down selection “undertrays fitted obscuring some underside components” why would it have that if the tester isn't supposed to select if if they are fitted?

But you could apply this argument to any garage? Unless you are referring to a particular garage in town x.

On the flip side, I've seen people raving about how great their local MOT garage.... Because their car was passed first time...
