10% off Virgin Trains Advance tickets (Adult) for Virgin Money customers (ongoing...)

9
Found 16th Jan 2015
NB: This applies to "Virgin Trains" who operate along the West Coast mainline routes+ & not the new "Virgin Trains East Coast".

Virgin Money are repeating for their customers/investors/borrowers in 2015 their offer from 2014, ie the chance to get 10% off Virgin Trains advance tickets.

The only catches appear to be (a) 10% off Adult Advance fares only; (b) "no other discounts" ie no chance to use any Railcards (c) only applies of course to VIRGIN train journeys on ADVANCE tickets.

The offer ran throughout 2014 for tickets upto 31/12/14, and got extended into 2015... [Aug 2015 update - the offer was to 31/12/15 but is now without any end date in the T&Cs - "16.This offer is subject to change and can be withdrawn at any time."]

Note: If you are a member of Virgin Flying Club or NECTAR you can still collect miles or points.

In the fares results page 'Virgin Money' will show as the tariff rather than Advance and if you hover over the price you should see the Adult Advance fare with 10% discount line.

If you get NO fares shown then either (a) not a Virgin route or (b) any Advance tickets on offer have already sold out.

FYI: I posted this discount last year (when I discovered it late in the Spring) and some of the comments there may be helpful for the people having issues

Always worth looking at MoneySavingExpert's ideas for train travel savings too:
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-train-tickets
eg a few Virgin Train routes can be found on Megatrain though often only on say Mon-Thu at early morning or late evening (eg Birmingham to Edinburgh).

You'll notice Virgin Advances since early Jan 2015 price increases are definitely more expensive before any 10% off!
eg MKC to BHM used to be from £3.50, now from £4.00 ie 14%+

If you're really interested in UK rail fares you can use the public BRFares website to look at the range of Advance tickets for a trip.

If you're visiting one of the West Coast Mainline cities/towns close to a 'Great Run" or "Great Swim" event in 2015, you can get not just 10% but 20-50% off using the HUKD link at:

Think you'll find you can still find at around that price IF you book early and are lucky enough to blag the (few) lowest price tix
eg just my first random search Mon 9/2 EUS->BHM 14:03 £6.75 after 10% off

£7.50 is now the lowest Virgin Advance price band per:
brfares.com/!fares?orig=EUS&dest=BHM

Does virgin get printed on the ticket? I'm just wondering if you have to show proof of being a virgin money customer

There's no requirement to carry any Virgin Money documentation to prove to ticket inspectors about your financial investment status when you booked or travel, ie it's not like a Railcard discount where you are required to carry a valid Railcard with you. (Obviously you wouldn't have claimed the deal if you weren't a customer.)

Aug 2015 update: latest offer details have NO END DATE - it used to say for travel to 31/12/15.
ie just T&Cs "#16.This offer is subject to change and can be withdrawn at any time."

8 Dec 15 update: don't overlook the HUKD here:
http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/20-off-virgin-west-coast-advance-tickets-for-downloading-new-free-virgin-red-app-2340865

ie 20% off Virgin Advances on West Coast using the Virgin Red App to claim - valid for 40 days more ie to mid Jan 2016 with 5559 claims left as I type this.

11Feb16 - just checked and while they still offer a 10% Virgin Money reduction, it seems that the offer now only applies to SOME trains. The 10% off fares are highlighted in yellow as "Promotional Tickets" with "Virgin Money" tag and a -10% described as "Virgin Money Value Advance Offer"

23Mar16 - just booked some more 10% savings and still available however their wording now says off some Advance fares:

"If you're a Virgin Money customer your cash can take you even further, with 10% off SELECTED Virgin Trains Advance fares along the West Coast Mainline."

[my capitalisation of SELECTED].

Still the YELLOW highlighting of those selected Virgin Money discounted Advance fares.
And of course nowadays the Virgin website lets you pick your seats, not just accept the initially allocated seat!
Don't forget your NECTAR points [quite a few bonus promos have been running for making bookings in recent weeks] or Virgin Flying Club [to keep a/c alive for 3 more years]
And MIGHT be able to also get some £back interacting with TopcashBack's current 2%!
