1&1 Internet - .com domain names for £1.19 - with £1.57 or more TopCashBack

51
Found 8th Sep 2014
Was looking for a new .com domain last night and this was the cheapest I could find by a long way. Going rate is about a fiver usually.

99p for the first year from 1&1, which is excellent on it's own.
EDIT: Sorry its £1.19 including VAT

£1.57 TopCashback so potential small profit, my cashback has actually tracked at £2.52, no idea why.

Nice for a .com address. .CO.UK same price.

They're a nightmare to deal with and won't stop calling me. Don't sign up!

Inclined to agree. Account security is a bit of a joke too. None of these type of companies are exactly decent or fun to deal with though I suppose.

Have to agree, they are a pain if you want to do anything but pay them. I have cancelled all the domains I had with them and with every one they charged me after cancellation, I had to email them for a refund!

Daily.co.uk is on the other hand is a much more pleasant experience, and UK based.

They ring me at least twice a day. I've had to install an app on my phone to block their number.

Absolute night-mare of a company to deal with. The domains are cheap for a reason! I would look at an alternative provider. I personally use Just Host, who have been much better than 1&1.

careful when giving them your details, I was told they have been known to add all your billing address details to the "whois" info of your shiny new domain!

Good to use it to open hotukdeals alternative, where swearing and offending others will be allowed, without censorship

Tried a cheap domain registrar before and they were a nightmare, wanted to charge for everything (e.g. changing nameservers) and when it came to transfer time (to go to a proper registrar) wanted even more money. Found it to be a false economy. Been with easily.co.uk for years and never had any problems, have also heard good things about daily.co.uk.

Agreed. Many better operators out there.

I've used 1and1 for years managing a few domains. The only problem I've had is emails from another system were getting filtered out by 1and1 but got through fine to other providers. The tech support staff weren't very helpful at all but i got around it myself redirecting the emails from another provider.

The control panel is very good and changes made tend to be live pretty quick. Easy to set up Wordpress sites and we get a ton of included mailboxes and forwards.

They do occasionally phone to try to get me to do a free trial of mywebsite or some other add on. They word it like it's free and assume you'll just say ok to get rid of them then you're lumped with additional monthly charges after 30 days if you don't cancel. I've always seen through this though and told them I'm not interested. To be fair we've used them for probably 7 or 8 years and I've had around 5 of these kind of calls in all that time.

Their online hosting is a very good product and easy to manage. As long as you don't need to deal with their tech support and just say no thanks when they try to sell add Ons it's fine.

Might as well pay the extra pennies and go with a frustration-free registrar.

Do they have privacy whois protection included with that?

If not, anyone know of any cheap .com domais that do?

NameCheap are very good. A .com domain costs £6.74 per year and includes free Whois protection for the first year.

Has anyone read 1and1's T&Cs? It doesn't look like much of a deal to me (especially considering all of the horror stories you hear about 1and1).

Every 1and1 tcb purchase I've made had been declined for no reason.

NameCheap are very good.

Thanks, just seen around £6.50, was hoping for cheaper lol

I had a .co.uk which I was pleased with until the bill crept up from £4.99 a month to over £35 in the space of 4 months. I had changed nothing. It has now taken me since July to cancel as they never answer calls. I threatend with letting Paypal sort it out and 24 hours later my account was canceled. They had no traffic management either which I didn't like as a previous domain was getting a lot of hits from Africa and Ukrain. Im a UK based beauty therapist so of no use to them

You're not saving anything by going with 1and1. After a year, the price increases to £13.19 which is more expensive than NameCheap and many other registrars.

Price for a .com domain for two years

NameCheap = £6.74 * 2 = £13.48
1and1 = £1.19 + £13.19 = £14.38

This is why I have voted cold.
Edited by: "aceuk" 8th Sep 2014

1and1 customer service are very crap
After first year they will automatically take the next year payment at higher price(you need to un-select the automatic renewal) and if you forgot getting that money back will be nightmare.

Transferred my domains to namecheap.com

Heard really bad things about this lot.
Look at the contract very carefully before you sign up to anything with them.

Worst internet company I've ever dealt with. Pay a few quid extra and use Gandi!

It happens with every domain unless you sign up for a private registration and pay an extra £5 approx. Not only just 1&1 but all other domain registrars do the same. Its normal.

Try crazy domains. They are very cheap especially the .me.uk

I own 7 with these, a pleasure to use & great prices, always codes lying around the webs to compliment it.

Set up (for free) a premium phone line e.g. 0871 etc and it diverts to another number but reduces spam calling as their either call and you make money or don't call.

A complete nightmare to deal with along with 123reg.co.uk. Try and cancel a domain with these clowns its a mess. As already mentioned Name cheap / Godaddy are good companies to register with; Freezing - minus 276 degrees kelvin !

Absolutely terrible company, avoid at all costs.

Dumb.

Cheap at first, then they rape your credit card...

AVOID

Just to add to the advice you've already been given in this thread - do not use 1and1, you will regret it in the long run

I would suggest Daily.co.uk or Gandhi as an alternative

I would agree with this type of statement. As long as you don't have an issue and need to interact with Customer Services, they tick along ok. Nothing outstanding though. But anything out of the ordinary and they are terrible. I would use them only for domain registration, nothing more and certainly not hosting. Not worth trying to buy cheap for that.

True. I cancelled one once but they still billed me. Then chased like an obsessed debt collector (through Arvato) to pay for something that was cancelled.

The time and distraction it took just isn't worth it.

Have held my hosting for the last 8 years and looked after the dozen or so domains I have had.

Never had any issue with them.

I have 30 plus domains with Gandi and like their tag lines says no bullsh*t

I wouldn't prefer 1and1. I always had problem with them. Not customer friendly.

Well I went for it - via paypal so if they end up overcharging or taking funds without permission I will take a case up with paypal.
