Seems like a decent deal for a 12000 BTU portable air conditioner (although at 40kg, the portability is questionable).
Seems well reviewed both on Screwfix and B&Q websites. The main complaint is the hose is a bit short at 1.5m.
Rated for 1400W so for my electricity cost of 15p per kWh, this will cost 21p per hour to run.
Separate window seal kit can be bought here (GoodHome Window Kit for Mobile Air Conditioner | Air Conditioning | Screwfix.com)

12000 BTU is 3.51kwh. 3 hour use per day will set you back about £2.85 at a rate of 28p not including the standing charge. Just for anyone curious.

You’re converting BTU to kWh. That’s just the cooling capacity, it’s not the power usage of the air con unit…. Do your calculation is completely wrong, it costs much less in reality as the power usage is just over 1kW

Incorrect, you're misinterpreting the BTU conversion table ( 12000 btu = 3.56kw) this is an equivalent and not a measure of draw.

The power draw on this machine is 1.4kw

6 hours per day (when required) on my electricity tariff = £2.44 (w/o standing charge).

Even this is not an accurate figure (it will be less) as it's based on a full 6 hours at a peak 1.4kw draw. (edited)

Tbh its all a negligible cost unless you really are running it every day for a full year. In reality you have it on for a few days. Hell lets say a full month outta 12. Its a cost im willing to absord

These are of no use if you dont have window seal kit.. i asked about window seal kit in B&Q, they have no clue...

I included a link to a window seal kit in the description.

Don't forget once the room gets to temperature the cooling turns off and just runs fan, once the temperature rises again it comes back on, so the energy calculations above don't take that into account
    harrythefish's avatar
What I was going to say. And in the same way that keeping the fridge door closed at all times saves energy, you have to do the same with AC in a room. (edited)

I’ve got this, also don’t have a window seal as b&q had no idea what I was talking about. It is noisy but it’s amazing.! It definitely does the job and is worth the money in my opinion and this is cheaper than I paid. So a good price

I bought this the other day. No under estimate it is huge. Definitely need 2 people to carry it

Can anyone recommend an extension for the outlet exhaust? (edited)
    Mark_Hickman's avatar
Just got mine today, it's enormous, don't know where I'm going to store it lol but I've found an extension hose at Toolstation and Wickes and Screwfix do the connector, just search 150mm on their site

while coming back from B&Q picked up a few unwanted wood panel they kept outside, i created my own window seal...
    adanielmoore's avatar
Did exactly same last year, only I took one the glass units out the window and replaced it with wood I cut a hole in
  8. Jonathan_Wright90's avatar
Bought one 2 days ago. Has a 150mm outlet. Was thinking of getting this from Amazon (amazon.co.uk/gp/…c=1 ) to extend the duct and attach to window kit.
It definately works a treat, lovely cold air.
    Psxgul's avatar
I don't think that one is good, it's thin plastic and heat escapes from it. You need PVC plastic

Reading the description I was under the impression the tank doesn't get filled using it for air con on if it's used as a dehumidifier but my tank is filling with water, it was only running a few hours last night in the bedroom and it was tilted slightly carrying it back down and water was leaking out of it, undone the cap on the back and about half a litre of water poured out.
It's been running all day now in kitchen so I'll have to check the tank in a bit before taking it back upstairs
    sadact06's avatar
Never emptied mine and its been used plenty of times, maybe short running cycles stops it evaporating effectively?
  10. cutie_595's avatar
Ah I’ve been after one of these. Thanks heat added

Cue incoming air con engineer to tell you these aren’t worth it (they are definitely worth it)
  12. slippers1977's avatar
15p per KWh - is that a night rate or some historic fixed rate
    banjomike's avatar
Good question. My rate is 27.44p and 51p daily standing charge with Ron.
  13. Chrisuk44's avatar
    I have one, it's great.
Have it in the kids room, I think it also works like white noise haha.
I just seal it with the curtains round the windows lol

Don't forget the owners of split ac systems who also love to jump on that bandwagon.
    Skie's avatar
Given you can buy a DIY mini split for a similar price, it’s a worthwhile comparison.

Wouldn’t be portable, but much more efficient and quiet. Not sure I’d want to be installing a mini split in this heat, though!

We took the plunge and had 2 air con units installed last year (1 x inverter).
Honestly the best purchase ever, and really enjoying on days like today etc!

I'm not so sure some people understand with the portable ones that you have to have a window open etc for it to be of use.

Here the guy I bought from, just call him have a chat. Both mine are on an external wall. You have the “blower” on the inside and the inverter on the outside. So have to connect between the 2 with electric and 2 gas pipes and a drain pipe, to take condensation out. On an outside wall they all go through 1 drilled hole that is hidden by the blower. Mine are made by Mitsubishi with 7yr warranty so hopefully a worry free 7 years etc. ebay.co.uk/sch…496

I live in Berkshire, still waiting for it to feel uncomfortably hot. It will happen but buying an AC for a few days use per year doesn't seem worth it. On Monday, should we drive to a shady spot, and sit in the car, engine ticking over and AC on, watching a few downloaded Netflix movies on the iPad?

Btw a route to work that's downhill most of the way in both directions is a very lucky find.
  17. freddo1322's avatar
Bought this other day, quite noisy but suppose thats the same with most Aircons
    greg666's avatar
No not at all. However, the one where you install them cost much more than the portable. I personally think they are pretty useless but cheap
  18. Dilip_Shah's avatar
It's too noisy, if you have it on you can't be in a Teams meeting, watch TV etc) this one is significantly more quiet.(£20 more but worth it)

    sc597's avatar
That one comes with a window seal kit which probably is worth the extra £20 anyway.
  19. avivalasvegas's avatar
This is not a very good aircon. Stick with the Delonghi PAX 100 to get the most efficient cooling out of a portable. Only 630watts for 10000 BTUs of cooling.

Still very much available, often for around £500 on ebay, which is what we paid. I see a few available right now. How long do you think you'll need to make up the difference in cost at our current energy prices?
  20. deathtrap3000's avatar
The exhaust hose will get hot and act like a radiator. Wrap it in a blanket to insulate it and keep the heat out. Also these suck air into the room you are trying to cool so bare that mind either back through the window, other rooms or even through floors.
    Mark_Hickman's avatar
Yes people don't realise if you're removing air from the building it has to pull in the same amount from somewhere.
Best to throw the pipe out on the sunny side and seal the window and open a window slightly on the shaded side of the building
  21. legend474's avatar
I got one of these last year and sent it back few days after. Too loud, although it did cool down the whole room fairly quickly!
    h0m3brew3r's avatar
You know you can let them run for a few hours before bed and then turn it off when you get in bed. Will stay cold till morning without running on
  22. Kazloav's avatar
This is the UK, yes, were experiencing our usual bout of freak weather atm, yet in 2 weeks we'll probably have the heating on. Unless you have the finances to warrant an AC, frail or have infants, they are totally unnecessary. (edited)

Personally really pleased we bought one last year. You could say the same about central heating - but everyone has it rather than just putting on a jumper!

Got this yesterday - need to keep refreshing everyday to find a Screwfix store with it in stock. They do seem to come in stock regularly at the moment! Although last summer they ran out Nationwide by about August.

It's HUGE but seems to do the job cooling.

Got the 9000 BTU model of this yesterday, turned on to try it and my wife seems perfectly happy with the quality, in case anyone's wondering this model is supposedly 'only' 30kg and is priced at £269.99. Seemed to be a decent amount of cool air coming out of it even though it's supposedly less powerful - looked fine to me.
  27. ZapThoseDeals's avatar
    Actually in stock anywhere...?
  28. paulbuk's avatar
Loads of the 9000BTU and 12000BTU in stock in Edinburgh and surrounding areas...

These are great. I have the 9k without heating but. Last year during the mad scramble in peak heat, after refreshing the page every time I picked my phone up I did get one at 249.99. Seems like the 9k has gone up to 289.99.

Hose is a pain in the arse as it just isn’t long enough. Doesn’t come with a sealing kit and they are all a massive faf to set up (the one linked is even more so!)
  30. CraftyCanary's avatar
Picked mine up from Solihull yesterday. Great bit of kit and cools the room in no time. Really bloody heavy though!
  31. Razar999's avatar
Good deal. The 9000 BTU version of this is £340 in B&Q.
  32. DangerousTheory's avatar
This unit is very impressive at cooling. As others say, it is enormous and heavy though (around twice the volumetric size of my 8,000 BTU Arlec unit from Homebase). Carrying it upstairs wouldn’t be fun, even with two people. Perhaps the size actually facilitates better cooling performance though, with a larger heat exchanger? (edited)
  33. Dubz1979's avatar
so my 5000 btu unit is pretty under powered then...... still great if pointing towards me.

Is it even possible to buy dual air conditioners here in the UK ? Just curious
  35. sc597's avatar
I got one of these at £299 in last summer's July heat. They are very big and heavy, I'm a big guy and it was a struggle to get it up the stairs. I normally scoff at instructions saying you need two people to move stuff but if you can take someone with you to collect I would recommend it.

As to the unit, it's a nice simple design, it is fairly noisy running depending on how much you want it to cool (usually maximum of course) but does throw out nice cool air as required. The hose is too short for most situations, I bought an extension but you don't want it too long as the hose itself really heats up, so try to keep it close to windows. I know it's not as efficient as a two hose unit but you get what you pay for... As long as the heat it is chucking out the window is hotter than the air that is sneaking back in from the rest of the house or window then you are winning.

The way I use it is to cool the bedroom off for an hour or two before going to bed, then switch off when you turn in. Works well except one small problem... my missus likes going to bed hours before me, so by the time I go to bed most of the effect has worn off! Anyway overall I definitely recommend and this price is ok, especially for a unit that you can buy from a store instead of messing about with online orders that get cancelled etc.

I'm only 5"6 10.5 stone and had to carry this huge lump upstairs a few hours ago, I now have a back injury
Not looking forward to doing it again tomorrow, wish I had looked earlier on in the year and bought one around 30kg and a little smaller instead of rushing last minute, although it's made my bedroom very chilli tonight and it was only on half hour which I'm happy with but when I just carried it back down with the help of my Mrs water was spilling out the bottom as it tilted slightly, so I unscrewed the drain and about half a litre poured out, I was under the impression it doesn't fill the tank when used as a cooler, is this incorrect? (edited)

Just paid £349 on aircondirect for a 12000BTU but with swing function so I’d say this is a good deal. Mine is only 28kg, so I carried it up two flights on my own but I note this one is 39kg. I paid £34 for a extension to 3 year guarantee which includes labour and parts.

Really impressed with portable A/C, looking forward to some quality sleep when the heatwave arrives. The plus side is in the winter these units often can function as dehumidifiers so helps reduce mould when air drying clothes.
  37. Sp0oner's avatar
Damn none in stock anywhere near me too late to the party with the impending heat wave. If this is going to be a regular occurence i’d be tempted with having aircon installed in the house like above in the lounge snd main bedroom if you can get it done for £2k
