Build your own for cheaper using a hp microserver.

Don't the red hard drives cost more by doing so?

You're just splitting hairs now (_;)

Yes, it would cost more to buy two 6TB WD Reds alone than to get this... ...and then you'd just have two hard drives with nothing to put them in. X)

I got three 6tb wd blues the other day, extremely quiet and fast for a 5400rpm drive. Can store all that 4k porn till my hearts content now.

No, you can't. And that's before even considering the value of time to do so. Most people with the existing skills to create their own server likely value their time to do so above the money they would save. Most people without the existing skills to do so would have to invest a significant amount of time to set one up.

I made my own NAS last year. Not because it was cheaper than buying one in terms of raw component cost, but as a learning exercise, and also because it's far more sophisticated than one off the shelf. It's not a better option for value though.

Mine was. Dell server with 4GB RAM/Pentium cost me about ~£80 (after cashback). Also, because I wanted raidz2, I needed 4 drives. Still can upgrade with another 2 drives if needed. So yes, 2TB of usable space costed me about same (plus spare 4GB RAM) as 12TB in this link BUT NAS from link above is no match to my equipment in terms of spec and security (RAID1 vs RAIDZ2), etc.

Also, not such a great deal taking into account you can get 4TB NAS ~£100.

Where? But I'm assuming that's a single drive bay with no redundancy?

But your "self built" server still had less space (you can't even buy the drives alone for this price) and took your time to setup. A great option for you, but not everyone has the knowledge, time or need for it.

I think it was on offer, closer to £120, still you can get Buffalo LS 210 4TB for £139 on Ebuyer...

Redundancy - you can't be serious saying you'd buy this 2 bay NAS for any redundancy. I have not seen anyone to set it up to RAID1. You buy it for "space".

Drive wise - Scan was doing 4TB HGST for £112 on TO and usual price is about £120 - would prefer them over WD.

I agree - great option for my backup requirements as my data doesn't consume loads of space BUT is critical for me. Therefore I got a UPS and another drive, where I backup my stuff to.

No, you can't.

My self-built 12TB (4 x 3TB HGST) N54L denotes otherwise.
It cost me a grand total of £250.

But you can't buy those for that price now even if you did at one time.

Unless you pair it with UPS, this (RAID1/mirror) is a recipe for disaster in case of power failure.

Buy 4 of these, they are the cheapest 3tb drives on scan.

And this

With the cashback it works out to be cheaper, you can get WD or Seagate drives instead and it would still work out cheaper.

Are we done here?
Yeah?
Thanks for playing.

The original deal isn't even available anymore but it doesn't change the fact it was a good deal when it was.

Your suggestion is a good option, probably similar to what I would use myself, but it wasn't a like for like comparison as they aren't NAS specific drives like the WD Reds that would be in the original deal.

I just went back to look at that server because I've been in the market for one, you're going off the excluding VAT price aren't you?

You're suggestion still wasn't cheaper than the original deal ☺

I'll stand by my first reply. No you can't.
