Hotels

The hotels I’ve chosen all have good reviews, good locations and most importantly free parking! There is plenty of cheaper accommodation if you don’t mind staying in hostels, also the hotels I’ve chosen all have good reviews, there are plenty of cheaper options which are less rated. You may also find it cheaper if you don’t book ahead and just book upon arrival!

Chicago - apartment - 20 minute drive into Chicago centre - 40 minutes by metro - Expedia - £250 - 3 nights - Expedia

Luggage

This flight is operated by American Airlines but booked through British Airways, as it is the cheapest ticket it doesn’t include checked luggage. The luggage allowance is 1 standard sized cabin bag and 1 rucksack. If you pack wisely and/or use laundrettes on route you can easily do this. If you want to add luggage you will need to book the regular economy ticket which is £80 return extra each!

Car hire

I’ve initially chose the next up from cheapest option which is a Toyota Yaris. If you’re not a big car buff like me, something that gets you from A to B is the best thing. There are plenty of more fancy cars if you wanted to do this trip in style.

Toyota Yaris?? This Has to be mustang land.Great Post though. Heat.

I always rent the smallest car available to pick when I go to the states, safe in the knowledge that they will almost certainly not have a car anything like that small. I usually end up with at least a midsize and if they do catch me out I can always upgrade at the counter - last visit they offered me an upgrade to a Mustang for two weeks for $99
Spend £100 more on the car and get a midsize SUV/saloon - you don't want to spend 14 days touring America in a Toyota Yaris. Other than that it looks great.

Not while Trump is playing president.
Congratulations on the hard work... Not a bad road trip at all...
Great work OP, i put together a trip similar to this a couple of years ago in New England, My Brother also did a two week road trip in May of this year in the States for similar money to the price quoted here, there are deals out there if you're prepared to do the research.

My balls are aching 🔥 for the effort OP
I wouldn't recommend driving to Chicago. Stay near Elgin or somewhere around that area, then drive to the Park and Ride and take the EL Train

I'm the opposite, I go for the largest. The states roads and car parks all built with large vechicals in mind. Last time out there I rented a Ford F150 V8 pick up. Best decision ever.
Heat for a comprehensive effort along with all the details needed. Hope we can do such a trip soon enough
Late night, right there

Excellent choice! You can't beat cruising around America in a beefy V8!
Be extremely careful booking Europcar in the US - they don’t operate there and subcontract to Advantage (in many airports, I’m assuming Ohare is the same) who are a hideous outfit. Pay the extra and use Avis, Budget, Alamo or Hertz. Or look at BA flight+car prices which include free checked luggage and are usually not much more than flight only, and you’ll get a free extra driver and rental with Avis
Heat for the effort
Fab.... Looking to do New York and Washington then a Virginia road trip next August for my 60th... Will keep an eye out for your posts.

Why ? I mean, i though obama was bad president, but i would never based my decision on if to go to USA on a holiday because he is in white house. Are you sure you dont have TDS ?
Super effort on the post.
Thanks for that.
I wonder what the weight restriction is?
I'm 18 stone ,would I get refused ?
Thank you.souch for putting all the work in here. It's summat my wife and I would love to do. Need to find somewhere to put the toddler though!
Great effort sorting out a deal ...I just got back from a 2 week road trip from Chicago I stayed at club quarters wacker on michigan and it cost £65 a night and that was over 4th july, then parking just around the corner was $25 a night through parking wizz. It was nowhere near as bad as anyone says the driving in the centre, and it was so much better to centre.
