Yes paying extra for inferior picture quality with worse cntrast and blacks always makes sense

it'll cost considerably more than £1400. I'll need to get a new XL house to go with this XL tv.

If you are going to knock then please say why ?

the LED TVs are just an LCD with different backlighting, they still dont have the same deep levels of black that the plasma tvs achieve, due to the dimming of the LED backlights, rather than the switching off of individual pixels that happens with a plasma.

Also the glossy screens on the LEDs while making the brighter range of the spectrum look very vibrant, cos often look smeared on SD content and un-natural on HD content.
Some people prefer the very vivid bright colours of the LEDs, whereas some people prefer the much more natural look of the plasma sets and the deep inky blacks with no blue hue to them, which is present in every LED I've seen.
even the reviews of the new LG infinia range have commented that tho the colours are more realistic in the new models, theres still a slight blue tinge to blacks because of the LED lighting.

If you're looking to spend that sort of money, why not hold out for a 3D TV

cos the moment the 3d tvs of equal size will be at least another £800-1000.
then you'd need the glasses if you buy a samsung (none supplied, retail at £99 each), LGs will come with 2 pairs, same as panasonic, sony with 1 pair.
then to watch 3d you'll need a 3d compatible blu ray, or a subscription with skyHD 3D.

lot of money to fork out.

There's no 60-inch 3D Television on the market... Biggest is 55-inch at £2800 from LG

tempted.. but now oos, would the 60PS7000 or 60PS8000 with THX not be the better option?
