Considering you get an awful bottle of wine (750ml) in most shops for £5 or so, £7.99 for a 1.5 litre of good Italian wine (protected origin) is a no brainer I'd say.

Found it in Lidl Sidley (near Bexhill, East Sussex)

I had it a year or so ago at a wine tasting evening, and it was my favourite out of the 7/8 wines we tasted. Not sure that helps, but I do know this is a good Italian wine

It is much better than the Carmanere, just the slushiness of the best grape in the world of wine in it, makes it worth twice this price for 1/3 the size, in most "Little Italy" food gaffs in London! Nab a bottle and try it with any really fresh cut of grilled fish or lean silverside, just yum!

This should help (taken from https://winefolly.com/review/guide-to-nero-davola-wine/)

"With its bold fruit flavors, robust tannin and acidity, Nero d’Avola is a great wine to match with rich meaty meats. Some classic pairings include oxtail soup and beef stew, but you could easily swap BBQ burgers with bacon and everyone will think you’re a genius. The gamier the meat the better because it will simply make your wine taste more fruity and candy-like.

Some spices that will pair very well with Nero d’Avola (that you might not have considered) include anise, orange rind, bay leaf, sage, cocoa powder, asian plum sauce, and coffee.

If you’re a vegetarian, whip out your black lentils and shitakes and make some beef-less magic."
Generally a good wine to choose from the cheaper end of a wine list. Best to check alcohol content cos generally the higher the alc content the better the flavour.

That's bonkers. No one working in the wine industry would endorse this advice.
As it happens I've tried 8 different budget Lidl wines over the last week or so and can confirm this is a good one. Possibly the best of all 8, though the £5.50 Rioja Crianza was nice too. Not keen on the others.

Well, I work at the business end of the wine game, drinking it. Anyhow, from those years I have found (to my expense) that my advice holds true. As I said this applies mainly to the cheaper end of the wine list. It especially holds true to Italian restaurants, and mainly red wines.

Maybe as a general rule of thumb when only buying the cheapest (? I dunno, never heard of this rule before) but it definitely does not apply to white wines/pinot noir/champagne/etc and there are more than a few 15% Spanish thumpers out there with all the subtlety of a brick.

If it works for you personally then fair enough. Wine preference is a very personal thing.

That's why I said cheaper end, unfortunately I have not found a restaurant where I can get champagne, pinot noir (burgundy style) good sauvignons 'at the cheaper end' . I also qualified my post (not rule) about white in my second post. Used to go to restaurants and the cheapest reds used to be 11% ish, they got it dirt cheap but you may as well have been drinking water. Things have generally improved but the practice still seems to go on, last time I went to a Mitchell and Butler chain restaurant (browns , O'Neills etc) they were still doing the same practice , Cooper's select from memory.

Shame! Will see what it's like tomorrow night

I've been buying Aimone Italian red from Aldi £4.99 a bottle, doesn't say what type or grape or anything is surprisingly but it's like a chateauneuf du pape without the £10-15 price tag, honestly give it a try and let me know if you like it, it's lovely.

I personally liked it! Went really well with a homemade bolognese 👌🏻
I like it for a weekday wine and buy it regularly along with the Lidl Primitivo, this size is also good for a BBQ wine - let it breathe for a bit - well between gulps anyway!
