Raspberry Pi Zero is a super-small, hackable, and ultra-low-cost computer.

Unbelievably the super-small and super-affordable Raspberry Pi just got even smaller and even cheaper! Pi Zero is the heart of a Raspberry Pi on a tiny 65mm x 30mm board.

With mini-HDMI, micro-B OTG USB, and the same 40-pin GPIO it still has great connectivity although you'll probably want our adaptor kit to help you hook it up to your existing devices.

Pi Zero Features:

BCM 2835 SOC @ 1GHz

1GHz

512MB of RAM

micro-SD

mini-HDMI

micro-B USB for data

micro-B USB for power

Unpopulated 40-pin GPIO connector

Compatible with existing HAT addons

Dimensions: 65mm x 30mm x 5mm

I got one last year and i was the same - it sat in a box for about 6 months

I think i'm just going to go for the easy option and get RetroPie installed on it for some retro games emulation on my TV.

I did get LibreElec, which is a stripped back port of OpenElec, running on it the other night which worked pretty well.

Just install some stuff and play around with it. I used mine as a media player.

thanks, time for another gameboy zero

bought for fun , with adapters

Good price, but there are a few extra bits needed to make it usable. Best going for one of the kits.

Some ideas:

1. Home automation system
2. Hi fi audio Sonos type system
3. Retro gaming
4. Learning to program (to learn to program you must learn these two topics Algorithms and Data Structures, any other guide on programming is useless otherwise, that is if you want to learn properly)
5. Electronics lab
6 Install and learn to use Linux and the command line (very useful for a range of computer topics such as networking and sysadmin)
7. CCTV system
8. Kod...no way never!

Thanks... Didn't know about this company. Seems they sell lots of interesting maker stuff

8 works just fine mate.

Kodi works as a standard media player. For streaming content via free addons, it's pretty much a piece of crap and that's down to the addons. Also most people have bloated install, with Kodi you should get the standard program and only install the addons you need. For free live streaming of TV channels it's crap, Mobdro is way better. For free streaming of films and music then it's only worthwhile with a paid for subscription. I use Plex and Mobdro for a reason, they work, Kodi is for n00bs and all of them got ripped off if they bought a prebuilt system from someone else. Kodi has the reliability of a drug addict for a partner.

They sell stereo audio out which you solder to your PhatDac (I'll give links below), then you have an output to go in your amp, stick some QSB audio speakers (£15 from Amazon, thanks to RustySpoons who originally mentioned them to me) and you have a cheap Sonos style unit for less than £50

Been thinking about getting a pi3 for ages but never got round to pulling the trigger. Had to have a punt on a zero at this price!

Hmmm, still would prefer the Pi 3 as my first... must resist the zero!

If there's a PC/lappie available, you might also want to have a look at NodeMCU modules which are based around an ESP8266 module with built in Wifi, and are very easy to network. Try googling 'NodeMCU home automation' or 'ESP8266 home automation.'

It comes in a few forms, the most compact being the 'WeMOS D1 Mini', which has a few inexpensive shields available as well:

Many more sellers on Ali and Ebay, some with cheaper prices, plus a few UK based sellers on Ebay, eg:

The k... We don't talk about runs just awful on this. I'd use it for the gameboy project I wish I had the time and patience to do it!

I'm not a great programmer but should be able to create something in Python.

My question is more related to what connections I will need. I'll need a keyboard and mouse, memory card, bluetooth dongle, HDMI lead and power supply - is that it?

I don't want to order these and realise I need something else.

I found those links I gave you in a couple of minutes, your next port of call with regard to your research should be on more specialised forums dedicated to Rasp Pi projects.

Also think about whose creating the project, if it's you then getting everyone else to do the work for you means you didn't create the project, you just outsourced the work to others. It's not a criticism, it's just reality. When I create a project, I get bits of information from others but ultimately I create the project and work it all out. The fun in creating a project and realising it, is that you do most of the work effectively. If you want a poker timer and don't want to create it yourself just buy one off the shelf, it'll save you a lot of time.

It's about decisions and what outcome you want.

1. Anyone can get a kit made up by others and put it together
2. Anyone can get others to do the work for them
3. Not so many people can design and build a project themselves

I'm not making a direct criticism as I said, just how I think about projects myself. I've created stuff before the Internet existed without the help of Google. We have Google people! Think about how amazing that is, but the major disadvantage is that many people don't learn skills they just look up Google, why learn anything when Google knows it all. I think Google has taken the fun out of a lot of things now, I used to look at guitarists/musicians etc and think wow amazing, then you go on Youtube and everyone can do it. People overall are getting better at things that used to be difficult because the dissemination of information is so abundant and therefore easily obtainable. Just about anyone can be excellent these days.

No, which is your own experience, which is limited and far from correct based on other peoples experience of the product.

But don't let me or anyone else stop you from defecating on someones thread.

Has anyone managed to set one up as a VPN server using OpenVPN? I've followed several guides (including the one Kate Russell did on the BBC website) but just can get it to work.
