While I have never had it, since it's Irish whiskey a good guess at a description would be 'bland'. That's what triple distilled does for you. While some people prefer that taste, I only buy Irish whiskey (or Auchentoshan) on the very rare occasions that it is sub £10.

Cheapest 'smokey' tasting scotch I've ever had is VAT 69, which I used to get for just under £7 a bottle or £11ish for a litre. Don't know where sells it anymore in this country for anywhere near that price anymore though. Sorry.

Lagavulin 16 year can be had for 45? in sainsburys and has a smokey taste along with peaty taste.

Sainsburys did have it as low as £33? some time last year but not recently
