Wow! Okay, so this could be the one I'm looking for... £500 is my budget too and I don't really want to budge. Current alternatives for the same £££ before I hit buy?

Heat OP!

LENOVO Ideapad 530s 14" AMD Ryzen 7 Laptop - 256 GB SSD £489.60 at Currys PC World

This if you want a slightly smaller screen / better integrated GPU and/or have HSBC/FirstDirect card with 10% visa offer to get another £40 off

Ryzen 7 for same money? But SSD slower, non IPS, non backlit keyboard, 14" screen ...I'm not selling it very well...:-)
EDIT: hmmm, I got most of my info wrong. Sorry! However, I suggest Intel over AMD if OP is in a quandry...

Thanks guys! No, this is a for my elderly father - the bigger the screen the the better. He's had a go on my 14" HP laptop and that was just a lil bit small for him. My 15.6" work's Dell 4K XPS was spot on for him He just didn't like the 2.1K price tag...

This, on paper, looks like a perfect match.

Have you considered a 24 inch monitor for him - plenty in the £90 to £110 range - that he could plug into a laptop like this? Just a thought.
Looks pretty good value! I was looking for one for my mum recently and this would be a great match, but I have managed to find a perfect condition hp envy 15 inch with same spec but touch screen convertible with a pen for 370, if I didn't find the hp I would have bought this 😁

Well, DPD tried to deliver on Tuesday and no one was in... so it's been scheduled for tomorrow. I'll report back, definitely
PureGolden02/10/2019 20:20

Right, so been playing all afternoon. First impressions? It's excellent! The build quality for a £500 laptop is out of this world... The boot time is mental: 12 seconds probably? Screen good.

The metal body, the weight is good, feels quality, the back-lit keyboard and finger print reader were all requirements and they've been more than met

Hope this helps, any questions, ask away.
How does a Ryzen Processor compare to the equivalent I3/5/7 please

What's the battery life like?
He's testing it now... Probably need a couple of days to get back to you on that one.

On a full charge, probably only its second since opening the box, my it's been hammered this morning: web, iPlayer and a lil bit of Netflix. Dad put it back on charge at, by my estimations as I wasn't there, 15% battery. Dad reckons he had about 6-7 hours of it - with some left over. Just hope it lasts? He's still really happy

Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it.

I was about to make the order and then realised that box.co.uk doesnt get the best revews on trustpilot with many mentioning limited warranty. Were you aware or..?

No problem! I haven't, no. I would imagine this would go straight through to Lenovo for warranty, wouldn't it?
Okay, I've just ordered too! Thanks for your help @slipd

I think you'd struggle to get a spec anywhere near this, new? Second-hand/recon obviously, but not new
Can anyone vouch for this site? How are returns/customer service?
The guys who have got this and had it for a few days, how are you finding it?
Comments would be appreciated.
I`m really undecided between this Lenovo or this Dell.
Both £499

I bought one last week for my Dad, it's amazing from my perspective! Excellent spec/value for money/build quality - it weighs a ton Battery is good. It's quick, boots in about 12 seconds from cold.

I'm comparing against fairly high-end Dells and HPs that I use for work.

Anything else, ask away.

Can't see what type of display on Dell? Is it a metal shell? Doesn't have backlit keyboard.

I think it`s a TN display and plastic.
Always had Dell without any problems and they last well.
It can be bought today for about £479.

Thanks. Yes, Dell has the newer 10th Gen CPU, but the rest....
I have seen the 530s in Currys. It's really attractive and has premium feel, especially the bright and vivid screen. Most people might not even need an I5, and probably only used 50% of the processing power.

I have to admit on face value looking at both specs the Lenovo seems to have the better of the two.
How reliable they are to a Dell, I`ve never had a Lenovo so I can`t say.
This current Lenovo is on offer to the end of the year AFAIK, so I`ll probably wait and see what comes up in the meantime.
What would you say is fair value for the Dell to make it a buy?

To me, I would not buy the Dell even at £300, an IPS screen is must on a laptop, more important than the CPU. An I5 8th Gen isn't slow anyway.
