Hey Guys;

Just a bit of a headsup, you can apply for the 16-17 railcard TODAYand allows people 16-17 the ability to purchase train tickets at the price of a child (50% discount).

"For only £30, the 16-17 Saver will be valid for one year or until your 18th birthday" So, purchasing the day you turn 16 is the best advice for this!

Benefits:
NO MINIMUM FARE AND NO TIME RESTRICTIONS, so can be used 365 days a year, anytime of day.

You can buy discounted tickets up until the expiry date of your 16-17 Saver. If you buy a discounted Season ticket before the expiry of your 16-17 Saver, you can continue to use this Season ticket for up to 4 months after expiry. The expiry date and the date that you can use your Season ticket until are shown on your 16-17 Saver.

WORD OF WARNING: The card becomes invalid on your 18th Birthday if you have purchased it when you are 17! Thanks for the heads up @TheDragonGuy

Eligiblity is simple

If you’re aged 16 or 17, you’re eligible!

The 16-17 Saver is valid for one year or until your 18th birthday, whichever comes first.

If you buy a Season ticket before your 16-17 Saver expires, you can keep using the season ticket for up to four months after the expiry. The two expiry dates are shown on your 16-17 Saver.

You can buy your 16-17 Saver from 20 August 2019. You'll need to have the following when you apply:

Evidence of age - a valid UK driving licence, passport or national ID cardA good quality digital passport-style photo of youDebit or credit card for payment

If you don't have any of the above forms of ID, you can upload a scan of your birth certificate or a Government-approved PASS card instead. Please note that applications using these forms of ID will take a little longer to process.

If you experience any issues during your online application, you can call our customer support team on 0345 301 1656 for help. We're available from 7am to 10pm every day of the year (except Christmas day).

Word of advice, the day you turn 18 the card becomes invalid. So don't buy one just before your 18th birthday.

>For only £30, the 16-17 Saver will be valid for one year or until your 18th birthday (whichever is earliest)

Yeah I tried this myself once but this is only in Scotland, maybe northern England too.
This is the only place I’ve seen. South is out of luck with this deal completely.
Thanks for that, DealsIUsed. Yes, not clear from reindeer's thread, but clear enough on TPE's T's & C's:-

  • The additional discount from 34% to 50% is only available on tickets for Transpennine Express services
  • Only available when purchased using the orange 'Buy Tickets' button underneath 'Save 50% with a 16-25 railcard' on tpexpress.co.uk/spe…ets or via the tpexpress app (promo code: TPESTUDENT)
  • The additional discount only applies to Standard Advance Purchase tickets only and Standard Airport Advance tickets to and from Manchester Airport
  • Tickets must be purchased in advance of travel, and are subject to availability, so book early to get the best possible fares
  • Customers must select a 16-25 Railcard in order to obtain discount, and must present this when you travel
  • Tickets are non-refundable, and are only valid on the date and train services(s) shown on the ticket(s)
Would like to point out that these are now ROLLED OUT if anyone needs/wants one!
Thanks, I'd just bought our 16 year old daughter the 16-25 Railcard but fares will be much cheaper with one of these. Don't fancy my chances of getting the railcard swapped. Still nothing ventured nothing gained.

Well, at least you can use the 16-25 railcard until you get to use the new railcard in September. Although, if you got a 3 year one, I’d recommend putting it away somewhere until she turns 18 and fish it out then.
Just ordered one for son who is 16 today thanks
Hi, is there a code for some money off ?
Like they usually do for the 16-25 railcard purchase (10% or 20% off)

Not as far as I can tell, sorry. It might be a bit new for it at the moment. 😞
Will it be possible to use clubcard points to buy it? (you can use clubcard points to buy the other types of railcards)

Yes but no, you can still purchase a season ticket valid for 4 months after your 18th birthday and it will still be honored. Obviously you will need to purchase the season ticket before your 18th birthday.

If you buy a Season ticket before your 16-17 Saver expires, you can keep using the season ticket for up to four months after the expiry. The two expiry dates are shown on your 16-17 Saver
