I've ordered it but I'm torn. not into video editing my MacBook Pro mid 2012 already 8gb. I've just installed a new Samsung 860 SSD. is it really worth it for me paying the £78.78 for the extra 8gb ram. any advice would great thanks callofdute

Add a modern SSD first before more RAM if these machines don't already have one.

Have a look periodically at how much RAM you use when doing important tasks, should give you an idea if a lack of RAM is holding things up

You need to check, I don't know the configurations from new but you could have either 2x 4GB or 1x 8GB.

You can grab a quick hardware tool like CPU-Z or something if you don't want to open it up.
I went on about this Mac system repot then memory it says I have x2 4gb . maybe I could go up 12gb could I have 1 8gb and 1 4gb ?

Better to use a matched pair ideally.

Try this mate

It should also tell you how many memory slots there are ....

my PC experience usually works fine with mixed memory dont know if Macs are more fussy - agree better for a pair - but not sure OP is desperate for performance.
If the 12gb works and you dont notice any odd behaviour then youll prob get benefit

thinking of keeping the 16gb got to put a new battery in anyway. battery already at 521 cycles.
Run parallels with windows 10 pro on my 2012 Mac Pro currently a bit lagging on running 8gb ram thinking this might be a solution

Most people wont need 16gb even if you do video editing. When doing video editing just see how much physical ram is free. You can find this from task manager.

If you have a 860ssd with 8gb ram its a pretty fast machine. With additional 8gb if et all there will be a marginal benefit to multitasking.
I got 2 ssds in raid and ram on my 2012 mac book about 1 year ago. It runs everything flawlessly but cpu is still an issue, and obviously can't change. Something to keep in mind.

I’ve just installed the 860 Evo into my 2009 MacBook Pro which has made it a lot faster but I only have 4gb ram. I’m thinking to upgrade to 8gb ram but then I think maybe I should just save up for a new Mac.
Just to clarify, you cannot upgrade the RAM in the mid 2012 MacBook Pro RETINA model as it's soldered to the logic board.

4gb to 8gb RAM will be a good boost in general for everything. You should definitely do it.

Thankyou. I might just do it. Probably save me the need to buy another one

Macs aren't fussy at all in my experience. Never had a problem - and currently running a 2012 Mac Mini on 10GB.

That's Late 2012, not Mid.

No, the mid-2012 Retina model (15") cannot be upgraded (unless you want to solder). There were non-Retina models (13" and 15") released mid-2012 and 13" Retina model released in late 2012 but I'm not sure about those. I was only referring to the mid-2012 MacBook Pro Retina model because I have one and I know it can't be upgraded (I think it was one of the first mainstream devices to have soldered RAM and I was gutted because it wasn't clear when I bought it).
