For anybody asking which is better out the Flyer or the Playbook. It really is a no brainer. The Flyer is miles ahead of the playbook and ALWAYS will be.

The playbook is being sold of because RIM (Research In Motion) are in huge difficulty. Just search any tech site for RIM Playbook and you will see that they didn't sell any of them. RIM has officially announced that they will not be going after the tablet market anymore. They cancelled the 10" version they were planning to launch and are just going to concentrate on Smartphones. They then announced they are delaying all their new smartphones until the end of 2012. By the end of 2012 RIM will no longer exist.

Nobody is going to make any new apps for the playbook as their is no market (I am an App Developer). They are going to release an Adroid "Emulator" but this will have limited compatibility with applications and you won't be able to buy apps from the Android market as it is not a Google Device.

The playbook Hardware is nice and the OS is smooth. But what is the point without any apps or future support. The Flyer is still being supported by HTC, They have just released a Honeycomb (3.2) version of Android which will greatly improve the experience of the device.

If you want to use it for work don't forget that the flyer also has a scribe so you can write directly on the screen which is great for note taking. It also comes with a nice leather case to keep it all protected.

The blackberry playbook does not even support blackberry email or messaging UNLESS you connect to it a blackberry phone (Yes it HAS to be a blackberry phone). And for those who believe the update is going to address those issues, Why don't you try reading back and finding out how long ago that update was meant to be released!!!

I am not a blackberry hater. But in my job I have to make decisions based on FACTS. We have just purchased 800 tablet devices for a mobile working project. The Playbook was one of the options but got ruled out because of the FACTS above. The tablet had to be a 7" device so we chose the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus. If we needed a 10" device although I am a great fan of Android I would of had to of chosen the iPad purely for it's simplicity and corporate security features.

Anyway to sum it all up, If you want a device that will just play videos and go on the net then the playbook will do fine. If you want a deivce to do ANYTHING else then for this price the Flyer is an absolute steal. I myself am getting a transformer prime after having a xoom since launch day. For me 7" is just too small for a tablet device.

Purchased the 32Gb 3G version yesterday and spent all day researching my purchase, had to visit PC World this morning as I was concerned about the speed of the Flyer after reading some of the posts.

Here's a summary of my personal opinions:

Blackberry Playbook, nice quality screen very fast and at £169 a bargain but pretty sure that it will die a death after Xmas with no continued software upgrades & support, if you want just web browsing and the odd game buy it as Need For Speed game played a dream on it.

Motorola Xoom dissapointed with the display quality and it's looks and it's still pricey sorry for any Xoom owners also I didn't see Xoom2 so may be much better.

Sony S Tablet, I was impressed with screens bright image quality, its good build quality the fact that its Sony games certified and fast speed it just felt a good quality item as just about all Sony items feel. The only disappointment about it otherwise I would have bought it is the price may be it will drop after Xmas.

Galaxy tab 10.1 inch good screen excellent build a real iPad contender but still too much at present perhaps it will drop after Xmas.

Asus Eee pad transformer the best screen of the lot very bright vivid colours very fast only negative still too much despite the release of the Asus prime after Xmas. Tempted if stock after xmas goes on sale cheap.

Dell streak, had one but not happy with its screen, fast enough but low res and has the hatching effect on the capacitive screen, also not very bright still for £99 it would be the best cheapest tablet you could buy at present so on a tight budget it would be a good buy for a honeycomb tablet.

And finally the HTC flyer it was flat when I got there and would not turn on, not a good start but with the help of a shop assistant I got it turn on and I was quite impressed the screen quality the resolution looked fine, it's was bright and I didn't experience the slow browser problems mentioned here although it was not as fast as the Playbook, Sony or Asus but it was definitely more than acceptable by the way it was running gingerbread so can not comment on what it would be like with Honeycomb on the tablet as this has only just been released. The build quality looked good and I was very impressed by the sound quality for such a small device. I think for the money it is now £222 with cashback and 10% off for the 3G and 32 Gb it's also a bargain.

The only concern I have with the HTC is support for ICS as I emailed their support last night and got the following response, perhaps it's me miss reading it but it sounds like a polite NO, any comments ?

One last thing if the Sony drops considerably in price after Xmas and within the returns period the HTC will be going back in exchange for the Sony.

This is a cracking deal. I have had a ipad1, HTC Flyer (32gb,3g), Acer iconia A100 and currently own a Samsung 8.9 tab. Although the flyer was not worth the 479 pounds I paid for it, hence why I sent it back, at 179 pounds its a bloody steal. Lovely form factor with a good battery, stock 2.3 android is fine for web browsing and daily stuff. You can always put a custom honeycomb rom on it. The screen is great and I love HTC sense. If you are in the market for a cheap tablet, buy this. Also instead of paying extra for 3g, buy a Three MIFI, they rock. The service is sooooo much better than 3g on tablets and you can use it for all your other devices. Heat added !!!!!!!!!!!

as you seem to have the experience of all these - what do you prefer and … as you seem to have the experience of all these - what do you prefer and why ?

The ipad1: biggest problem I had was that there is no concept of a file system. Files can only be stored within an app. You are also locked into iTunes and there are no Widgets

HTC Flyer : I paid 479 pounds for this and was dissapointed that it was a over sized mobile phone for the money. I did like the 7 inch form factor, build quality, the scribe pen and browser. I sent it back purely on price paid. At 179 its a steal, last month people where killing each other to get a HP Pad for 199 which was the size / weight of a brick and had a unsupported operating system. Buy the cheap flyer and stick honeycomb on it.

Acer Iconia A100 : Super fast and slick operating system, nice form factor but let down by a weak battery, only lasts 4 hours of use. Wake up at 5am, use on train, sleep all day, but by 9pm in the evening the battery has run out. Again tho a cheap tablet at 250 pounds.

Samsung 8.9 : From factor is excellent, not too big not too small, very light and thin. 10 hour battery life, fast honeycomb and touch wizz has some nice features like mini apps. But it does cost 389 pounds so a premium product.

I have used a blackberry and did like it, but email is strange.'too me only makes sense to buy if you are already a blackberry user.

    In conclusion
    budget : HTC Flyer
Premium : Samsung 7 or 8.9 or 10.1 depending on form factor preference
Net book replacement / students / small office : Asus transformer or Asus Slider if you are too cool for school

    Hope this helps

Just thought I'd share my experiences....

I bought one of these on Christmas Eve (actually ordered at Dixons but got one in Staples as they price matched against Currys and the price came to £174 with their 10% as the original price was so high)

Pen is included in the box as stated before by the way

(oh, and I own an iPad, iPad 2, HP TouchPad, multiple android devices and all sorts of phones so I'm pretty by-partisan)

Included software (Gingerbread on 16GB Wifi model) is pretty rank but the upgrade available on XDA developers to Honeycomb is easy to do in 20-30 minutes and massively improves speed of operation and pen support.

Build quality is excellent overall, charger is a bit naff and the colour scheme is a little strange (black silver and white). Overall build is nearly in iPad territory and well ahead of the Touchpad. Screen is very good with pretty even back light (better than any of my iPads). Installed with Honeycomb and Dolphin browser it's the best browsing experience on any of these 7" tablets and better than the stock playbook experience.

Battery life seems decent thus far but haven't had time to check fully.

Overall a total bargain for the 32 or 16GB models and defintiely the unit I'd go for if I wanted a tablet on budget. Overall the iPad still edges it on app selection, build and battery but if you want the size, price or pen of the Flyer it really is the clear choice.

Just wanted to drop a note to say thankyou. I happened to check my emails on my phone early on Christmas morning (while inhaling coffee after an early start with my 4 little boys!).

My husband has been after one of these for a while, but at £500, a price I couldn't justify!

Having promised him a cheque to put towards it, I was most pleased to spot the HotUKDeals email, with this as the main topic!

7.15am, the 32GB had been ordered, and husband is a very happy bunny!

He'd even been considering a second hand one from eBay for £300, so this is better still!

thank you to all who contribute to this website, I've used it a couple of times in the past (so long ago, I only had 3 children, given my user name!), but I now plan to a) use it more frequently and b) where I can, offer some input to deals that I may stumble across.

    Merry Christmas everyone, and thankyou!

I've just been down to Currys and had a little play on this and to be honest i'll eat my words and say the playbook, in my opinion, is better in leaps and bounds. I found this tablet to be quite 'sticky' so to say when sliding across the menu, i also didn't like how the home screen was laid out. However, if you love HTC then you'll love this as its pretty much a big HTC phone without the phone calls and texts

It's Android, so just replace the homescreen with something like Launcher Pro and you can ignore the HTC Sense user interface.

All this said the playbook is a joy to use if Internet and playing media are your preference.. I think it is horses for courses. The thing that worries me most about the flyer is the android operating system, as so far I prefer iOS, webos and QNX (or whatever the blackberry thing is called)..

What a nice comment! So many people on here (not everyone obviously!) seem to want to hurl abuse and put down other peoples opinions or simply slate deals with no valid reason so it's lovely to hear something nice from someone genuinely grateful.

I would also like to thank the OP, I can't wait to get my hands on my new toy!
