Sam Mendes, the Oscar®-winning director of Skyfall, Spectre and American Beauty, brings his singular vision to his World War I epic, 1917. At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (George MacKay) and Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers—Blake’s own brother among them.

I was disappointed with this film. Acting felt ropey at times and I felt like the whole premise seemed a bit strange - why not just drop a message by aircraft?

Second time I saw it I was absolutely beguiled by it, especially the bit near the end with the destroyed town and the woman with her baby, like some sort of terrible, wonderful dream.

Sir Roger is a genius eh?
Watch again with his commentary to appreciate the shear effort involved.

I would say so... and a well-deserved Oscar for his work in this case.

The score from Thomas Newman adds a lot to the atmosphere as well.

Sam Mender makes an all time classic like Road To Perdition and Skyfall and Spectre get mentioned.

I didn’t enjoy watching it in the cinema, but watched it again on Prime and loved it.

Ok, the overall premise of the movie is... a bit wonky... nobody of the frontline commanders knowing from the strategic retreat of the germans, and the new fortifications weren´t built in a single day.

    And some other details..
