Guess there's maybe cashback from Play but not from Amazon, giving Play the edge though.

I currently have a system that has 512mb x 2 installed and the crucial scanner says I need to install in pairs.

Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300,DDR2 PC2-6400 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*

Is this memory compatible based on the above?

It should be fine, I'm 90% certain that it will work without any problems but I could give you a more certain answer if you included the make of your motherboard. Also just to say it's not a must that you need to install in matching pairs, it's only a recommendation. Hope this helps!

Yes, it's PC2-6400 RAM.

It is best to do matching pairs otherwise you don't get the benefit of reading from 2 channels (banks) at the same time. Not necessary, but you get quicker RAM access.

Thanks for the replies, so it would be best to leave the 2 x 512mb installed and purchase 2 of these 1gb sticks to run alongside that.

i'm not sure which board it has, guess only way to find out is open up the machine is it?

Meant to say is the 800mhz figure a concern given the CPU speed below, ir has that nothing to do with it

Maximum Memory Capacity: 4096MB
Currently Installed Memory: 1GB
Available Memory Slots: 2
Total Memory Slots: 4
Dual Channel Support: Yes
CPU Manufacturer: AuthenticAMD
CPU Family: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ Model 11, Stepping 2
CPU Speed: 1000 MHz

Thanks for that, its the standard memory supplied by tell.

Is there an easy way to tell what speed it is?

great price, just bought two!

ordered from amazon because of I have amazon prime trial :D. Thanks

Ordered 2 in the end, mind you just awaiting the cancelation email like last two times.

Ram I have now is PC2-5300 (333MHZ)

Guess that means best to get rid of this stuff, or maybe my board won't suppost the new stuff and clock it down..

Board details are Dell 0RY206, NVIDIA chipset / southbridge MCP61, Rev. A3.

Also has Fintek F8000...i'm none the wiser

Get rid of your two 512mb sticks as they are 667mhz and your new stuff will be 800mhz.

On the amazon link

Well the only 2 that show 13 quid on Google shopping are actually showing as £17 and £24 plus £2.95 delivery on the revellution web site and I've never heard of them. Most seem to be around the £21 mark, is that still a decent price. :?

Received my two sticks of ram today, set about installing and the 2 x 512mb were installed next to each other in black slots.

The board has two blue slots beside them.

So the question where should be installing for maximum benefit, for now i have just done a direct swap for the 512mb and have the 1gb sticks both in the black slots.

I read this' alternately coloured blue and black to denote memory channel, with dual channel memory being enabled when two DIMMs are populated in memory slots of the same colour'

I'm wondered if these should perhaps be installed in the blue slots or is this not dual channel?

Thanks

Which motherboard do you have?

You also no longer want to be using the 512mb sticks

I'm getting fed up with play.com and their games. This is the 3rd or 4th time this has happend to me.
Ordered one (showing stock available) and now checking account "awaiting stock". I guess in 2 or 3 weeks I'll get an email saying they have cancelled the order.

Meanwhile I'm in nowhereland, unable to buy elsewhere just in case it turns up.

Hi the PC is an Inspiron 531, I posted more info about the specs earlier in this thread.

I have taken out the 2 x 512mb and put in these 2 x 1gb in the two black slots that the old stuff came out of, was just worried that the blue slots might have been a better option but seems not.

Notice a big difference when working with high res photos etc.

Maybe should have went for 4 stick at the £13.99 price given they are at £31.99 now.

As for the board, details are Dell 0RY206, NVIDIA chipset / southbridge MCP61, Rev. A3.

Also has Fintek F8000...

Not sure if that gives much away.

I noticed while was in changing the memory these is a cable coming out the back of the card reader which is not connected to anything, don't imagine this is normall or is it?

Thanks for that, I did have a look through that already, it was just the reference to the blue and black slots in another document I read that made me wonder.

Would this memory that I have removed work in an older machine, its a Dell Dimension 4550, I can't get that CPU-Z program installed in the system.

As its an older machine most references I can find claim the memory to use is PC2700 and PC3200, would moving it even further upto this PC5300? I took out cause issues.

Crucial checker does not should anything higher the PC3200 but just wondering as my fathers computer could be done with a bit more than 512mb

The older machine uses DDR 1 [pc-1600 [ddr200] pc 2100[ddr266] -pc2700[ddr333] - pc3200[ddr400]]and therefore you cannot use it in the older machine* (There were a couple of early DDR 2 boards that also had DDR 1 slots (you could not use both at same time)

The dell you refer to only seems to allow a max of pc 2700 also these dimms are 184 pins THE 512Mb DDR 2 spare dimms you have use 240 pins.
