It doesn't have to be.

Tell us the games you play, your budget & the rest of your PC spec - including PSU & monitor size / res.

We'll tell you what's the best card to suit you atm

I've got

2.2 Core Duo
4gb Ram
PSU is 580w
Monitor is a 24"er at 1920 x 1080.

Currently running a 8800gt 512mb.

I know I ideally need more than 512mb due to the screen res I'll be running at & that narrows it down to a choice between the 4870 1gb or a 260GTX on a budget of £130 - £140 ish.

The stressful bit is these damn price changes every 2 hours - jump in or hang on another couple of days..

Mainly playing COD4 & Left4dead. Have Crysis installed but dont want to play that till I can smooth it out a bit.

Of course plan B could be to upgrade the CPU for £ 130.....................:w00t:

Argh.....could build a new system tomorrow, or wait for summer, or wait for autumn...........
argh.....2 x 4770s or this.....so .... many ... decisions!!!!!

Good deal. Thx.

Guess this could be the AMD Phenom single card solution, and use 4770 in x-fire for an i7 system..................

Most games are GPU driven rather than CPU, so I'd save the money to spend on the former for now.

You don't specify which C2D chip exactly, but most (if not all) OC reasonably well, so a good cooler (£25-30) & overclock should keep you going for a while.

You're right, this or a 216 core GTX260 for around £130-140 should be good enough / best for your budget for now. Although some might argue the jump from a 8800GT to these isn't that significant, the extra 512Mb in high resolutions should make a considerable enough difference to make the switch. You could also sell your 8800GT (for £40-50), & so have one of these for £80-90.

What's the make & model of the PSU? You probably need something better if running one of these & overclocking.

A little off topic, but a rather helpful ]list at WidescreenGamingForum dealing with gaming in ws format including 1920 x 1080 resolution. Click on 'Detailed report' in the right column against the particular game of interest.

Cheers for that.

Its a 2.2 E4500 CPU & the PSU is a Hiper Type-R 580w extremeoverclocking.com/rev…tml

Havent considered overclocking the CPU but have been thinking about a new cooler just to quieten thing down a bit & was looking at the Arctic Freezer 7 Pro - or is there a better one you would recommend?

Thinking about it though my Mobo is from a Dell Vostro so probably wont support overclocking the CPU ??

This is now £132.50

Both should do for now.

Not bad if you're on a budget. Couple others if not, & only if you get a better motherboard:

1. ]Xigmatek HDT-S1283 (H.D.T.)
2. ]Akasa Nero AK-967

If you're not in a great hurry, they regularly sell for ~£23-25 on ]Scan/todayonly.

Yes it won't do, as it most probably has a very limited BIOS for setting manual FSBs & voltages.

Cheers for advice - may go for one of the coolers you pointed out - only a few quid more than the Arctic.

Price updated to £132.25 - available on Scans Today only page.

Should be that price till Monday lunchtime.
