Is there any practical day to day use for a 3d printer? I imagine it's one of those things that'll be fun for a week or 2 then just rot in the corner of the room.

Looks like it'd be a bit of fun, probably just me, someone I know was excited as a kid at Christmas when they first came out, thinking of all the possibilities. All I could think of was replacing board game pieces

Got mine from the last Aldi special, and still using it. That's more than 2 weeks usage and not rotting away in the corner.

Seriously, there's plenty of ideas on Thingiverse. I started with someones design and learn to modify it to suit my needs. Is it a necessity, then probably not but it is a hobby and you'll find things to make for your other hobbies.

so no then?
But is this PLA any good?
Cheers. Ordered a red and brown roll, promotion applied to both.
A 3d printer is way better than lego. Lego is so old fashioned, why play with that if you can design and print your own 'real' things.

so no then?

Maybe not day to day use .....but even just typing in a simple word like 'bracket' in the search gives you ......4,127 results

Use your Imagination ! LOL

Haha, thanks, but recommendations
3D printers for the home consumer are crap. I have one of the Robox ones and it was nothing but trouble...the nozzle kept blocking up (...had to box the whole thing up and send it back twice), the flat bits shrank so ended up curved and the sheer time it takes to print anything half decent out is ridiculous! Maybe in 5 or 10 years time they'll be brilliant (...and the professional ones are pretty mindblowing), but for now, save your money and your sanity!
Seems expensive to me for a generic pla, i generally pay around £10/£11 per kilo for the cheaper stuff.

You have to play first 2-3 weeks. Then it is like tool to use when you need it. Do you play with your screwdrivers everyday- probably not.

This. Creality CR-10 is awesome for the price. It's also what Episode VII/VIII R2D2 builder uses personally. Alternative is the Lulzbot at a way higher price used by BB-8's builder Matt Denton- He's got soem awesome giant lego projects on his personal youtube channel. Disclaimer- I totally don't have a thing for creature/model fx of star wars and did not quit my job to pursue to

I've used mine to print working prototypes of different medical devices I've been developing, as well as replacement parts for appliances, adapters, containers, tools, gifts, decorations, and various other household items. Plenty of uses if you've an imagination.
