If it meets the specs then it is not rubbish. Buy on specs not on name if you know anything about oil.

So if it were cheap enough we should ignore it's bad reputation and buy Asda's own oil? oO

Is the reputation from oil experts or just "internet experts"? If it meets the spec for your car then it is as good as any other oil.

You make a fair point although the "internet experts" that I trust seem to agree with my own experience in that cheap oil just doesn't seem to work as well.

Great for any 50-125cc 4 stroke bike owners. And great for those that want some oil to top up their car with. (Obviously Mobil 1 is better, and if you have a nice car with big performance figures then sure get the expensive stuff.) Do you really think many garages put that in when they service a car? No, they use whatever is the cheapest drum of oil that meets the spec. It will be perfectly fine for normal road use and within the correct interval limit. Probably made by Petronas like most budget/own brand oils, I have never had an issue with Eurocarparts QX, Halfords or Carlube oil. I doubt this stuff is any different.

Well when I tried the ECP "QX", which seems to get recommended a lot on here I found it quite dark... A bit like a quality oil that's been in a heavily-used car for a couple of months.

More seriously though most people notice that the engine 'feels' smoother after an oil change and certainly in my experience I find that that feeling lasts a lot longer when I use quality oil. And I also seem to do better on the MOT emissions tests.

I used to have the same mentality as you until I had put in the asda semi synth in my car. the car ran sluggish and more thirsty after just over 4000 miles, by 6000 miles I decided to change the oil, which was way ahead of the service schedule of 9000. I have found sludge started to form and with the head cover removed I could see varnish covered the cams and valves. So from my own experience I could tell you that not all oil of the same spec are the same. It just meant that the oil met the minimum requirements of that specification. You wouldn't buy a budget Chinese tyre thinking it's as good as Michelin because it has a kite mark on it and rated to the same load and speed would you?
