Surround sound system will probably have an option to adjust audio delay somewhere

once again Pound shop

With HDMI connection (Capable of sound & picture) so widespread these days for TV and surround sound systems etc, does anyone really need a secondary connection for sound from consoles & DVD etc? Especially as optical isn't capable of the newest sound format - HD sound from Blu-Ray.

The only use I have for them is from TV to AV Receiver for TV sound only and from the Sky+HD box, which just isn't capable of 5.1 sound via HDMI only

We use our digital cable for the ps3, never really used it for tv/dvd they're already hooked up to our surround sound system.

I still use optical on my PS3 to my Onkyo AVR...then HDMI to TV. I prefer the flexibility of being able to use it without surround sound for late night use if i want. Lack of HD audio from PS3 isn't an issue as i have a standalone BluRay player.

Does your Onkyo not do "passthru" ? I have a Yamaha DSP-Z7 which copes with HDMI only for the flexibility you mention.
