I think the poster's intention is that you buy the external drive and open it up and remove the drive for use in the PC - quite valid - though would need to check what warranty you'd get on the drive.

Usually naked drives get a 3-5 year maker's warranty; not sure about drives sold INSIDE other maker's external box would be covered for (probably the same, but not sure hence why I flag the issue).

2 year warranty on both external and internal!

Cheaper than … Cheaper than both:http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/1Tb+Hitachi+Deskstar+7K1000.B+SATA-2+Hard+Drive+16MB+Cache+?productId=34559or this if that sells out:http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/1TB+Samsung+Spinpoint+F1+SATA2+7200RPM+32MB+cache+?productId=30998

First one sold out, the other is a different drive. The NAS I boiught this disk for doesn't work with Samsungs reliably sadly.

true that would be a cheaper 1tb hard drive, and it seems that some of those external drives do have the same hitachi disk. However some also have the Seagate drives in that have an epic fail issue.
