Seems this might help with it ? ;http://hardwarehackersunite.com/

Whats does this do? I had a read but not really understanding it

Take a look at the user reviews at ;

cnet.com.au/net…htm

They seem to REALLY 'HATE' the Netgear operating system to such a degree that they want to swap the Netgear system for another ?

:-)

Can you access this from a DLNA TV?

Also I guess because it's only a 2 bay RAID device storage is halved because of mirroring or whatever type of RAID it uses?

Great deal but unfortunately great in the same way 'cheap dog faeces' is a good deal.
The Stora is a hateful spitebox of evil. Check all posts on Stora on here if you have doubts.
STAY AWAY!

good price
i seen these at pcworld yesterday for £189

It is DLNA certified and according to the Netgear factsheet you can either
a. Mirror 2 drives - 2 x 1tb drives will give you 1 tb storage with a back up
b. Run them independently - 2 x 1tb drives will give you 2 tb storage

Unfortunately I am inclined to agree with blacklodge after buying one from dabs last week. It doesn't allow 2 drives to be user together (they can only be used to mirror each other) despite what the specification says. The software to do this was withdrawn. The software is rather awkward and locked down. It's a shame as it is a nice looking box. The speed to copy anything to the drive is appalling too.

I've had a readynas for nearly a year now and it's worked great as a data dump and streamer to my ps3 - but the operating system is a baffling pile of cack - and I've been in I.T for 18 years and many of them in servers. If this is the cheaper version, I'd imagine they've made it worse.

in simple terms its box which you can add 1-2 hard drives that you can link to your network......you can then:-

backup data / pics/etc to it - manually or scheduled/automatic

use it as a 'server' for music/pics/movies - so you can send music/movies/pics to other compatible wireless devices (check compatibility though!!)

think of it as a usb hard drive that you link to your network instead of your laptop/desktop....which opens up a whole load of other functions that you wouldnt get which a standard usb drive

edit function sucks on this site.......doesnt work!!!

you can also remotely access your music/files...providing you have the right kit...eg if travelling on a train then youd need eg a laptop/hand held device, with wifi or 3g dongle/card and suitable application and access rights...then you can access you music / files in transit

i can access the music/files stored my hp mediasmart server via my iphone whilst on the train - providing i get a decent enough 3g signal...its not perfect in all scenarios but it works ok

According to another thread on the blog, firmware v2.3 fixes it so that the drives can be used independently. It does however appear that 2.3.1 has broken it again lol So if you can get just 2.3, you might be ok (_;)

so why ask??

seems like a locked down piece of c**p......maybe trying to be the iphone of NAS world....thought my hp mediasmart server was locked down too much but this takes the biscuit it seems

Why ask? What I was asking (as CHalligan rightly says) about hardwarehackersunite.com/ as I don't understand it, I wasn't asking what a NAS was

storas are no good, your better off with the readynas if you want to stick with netgear.

I've had one of these for a while now, I think it's great.
If you want a box to store your movies/pictures/music so that you can access it from multiple PC's in your house, or access them remotely I think it's very good for the price.
Yes you can build or buy a NAS with better specs or reliability/speed but you get what you pay for and for under £100 I think it's great.

I've only had 1 issue with it(which Netgear support fixed within 24 hours)

But the DNS-323 is much better, no? (and I saw it on play.com for about £75)

sadly 'Sorry, this product is currently not available' so all gone I think

I'm just curious as to why Netgear don't actually call it a NAS, if that is what it is. You'd be mistaken for thinking that it's just another external HD with mirroring.

Play have the D-Link DNS-323 at £149.99 with no included HDD. I personally wouldn't own another piece of D-Link equipment, my experience hasn't been good to now whereas the early Netgear stuff I had worked fine for me. Just my opinion though.

They refer to it on their website as "Home Media Network Storage" so its 2 thirds of NAS lol They are probably dropping NAS to appeal to the less technically minded who are scared of acronyms and/or the unknown
