would this be wasted in a pci slot on a xeon e3 v3 system

It would run at PCIe 3.0 speed, and most PCIe 4.0 drives have better random IOPS than PCIe 3.0, even when running at 3.0 speeds, the only thing that would suffer is the maximum sequential speeds which aren't that important once you move from SATA to any type of NVMe drive. (edited)

Dammit, I wait ages for a decent 2tb for ps5 deal and then see the Netac deal, wait a little bit and then the moment I bite this make drops in price!! How goes this one compare to the netac deal? (edited)

This isn't fast enough for PS5 if you were to go by what Sony recommends.

Also a while back you could get a 980pro from Samsung student portal and claim £40 cashback for about the same price as this. Maybe it's worth checking if that's still going? (edited)

Would this need a heatsink? I have a Dell G7 laptop and as far as I can remember when I took the bottom off last, there's not a lot of clearance above the ssd enclosure.

Better to be safe than sorry. May have to look at pads rather than an enclosure so you have enough space

Would this be good for a second drive, where I’ll be downloading files to it, extracting, maybe running a few games? My system drive is a 980 pro 1tb but currently only have old hdd’s as additional drives.

Yeah will be fine. When it comes to games it makes very little difference when it comes to ssds / nvme

Getting more affordable now, just in time for me having decided I favour the current gen Xbox as the PS just doesn't feel that great haha
