These so called CrossClimate tyres wears out twice as fast as normal summer tyres. My mate had them and after 19 000 miles they are done.

19k is good, I only got 13k out of contenitals sport.

I have over 15000 miles on mine and less than half worn, not to mention the fact that after the new year I will reverse then front to back so expect to get at least another 15000 miles out of them. I suggest you tell your mate to learn how to drive.

Great tyre, good price. Have been running on these for a year now and work brilliantly in bad weather. They might be a little more expensive than pure summer tyres but worth the extra for year round safety.

Just hope you know that reversing is needed every 6k and not just swapping front tyres to back, there is special order of swapping them.
This has some effect on wear, but not that big to be worth a hassle..

You'd be absolutely fine with these. 50 represents the percentage you need to apply to the width to calculate the sidewall height. So your stock tyres are 112.5mm high, 45s would be 101.25mm high. Considering you've got 8mm of tread on a tyre, you'd be in a position where there is only a tiny difference between worn 225/50 and a new 225/45.

It is not going to make any difference to the car, the only slight difference would be your speedo over-reading slightly (and again, we're talking the sort of difference you get between new tyres and old - i.e. imperceptible).

Theres a Michelin promo on right now with a Michelin holdall with bits and bobs for buying 2-3 tyres and a better one if you buy 4 tyres. Might not work with this site but all they ask for is an or number ref no.when fitted.
Saw offer on kwik fit site which sells my tyres for the same as black circles fitted.

As for Blackcircles being cheaper on ebay, their own site has got a 3 x Tesco points promo on so I expect that has something to do with it.

It's not worth taking directional tyres off the rim to put them on the other side of the car, to even out wear that will be pretty even anyway if your geometry is OK. It's barely worth swapping front to back; you'll still wear out the same number of tyres in the same amount of miles. Only reason I ever would is to ensure you have the grippiest tyres on the back at all times (to ensure the car is as stable as possible under braking and in the corners).

W is 168MPH so highly likely you're not going to be needing anything more. These 94 load rated tyres with a strong sidewall (XL) mean they are suitable for some pretty large cars too so you're unlikely to need anything more beefy.

Is a good price, too.

I'd still buy Uniroyal rainsport 3 (at nearer £60 a corner) though.

When the front wheels lock up the worst that happens is understeer, which is controllable even to a driver with very basic skills. You put grip on the front and not on the back, what happens is oversteer and if you're not pretty skilled you're heading backwards into the scene of the accident before you even realise what has happened.

I had been told this years ago, but out of frustration with the poor traction and acceleration on a very wet track day at Donington I decided I knew better and was going to ignore it. I span twice in one lap before coming back in and changing back. OK 300BHP on a track in the wet is a bit different to pootling to the shops, but the principles hold.

Very interesting Jules_HT thanks for the info. I've been driving for 35 years and I learned something new! One point I would make is that tyres seem to wear out much quicker nowadays than in the past. I have a Seat Ibiza 1.4 with 12000 miles on them that are half worn!
I guess softer compounds make for better grip.
I had Michelin (xzx's if my memory serves) that were lethal in the wet but lasted about 75000 miles!

Suggest that you understand the causes of tyre wear. Driving along motorway at legal speeds causes less wear than driving on roads with more braking and accelerating. Poor road surfaces and hot/cold weather also affect wear.

Have you seen uniroyals on offer anywhere? They're my tyre of choice too.

Can get 4 tyres locally fitted for £201... Ridiculous value.. Will need some come January... Do I bite the bullet now?!

Only thing that puts me off is the tyres will be a "black circles quality choice". The "value" choice is only a few quid less per tyre - would just be nice to know what "quality" would constitute.

Part worn tyres are £20 each fitted and balanced and those with nearly new tread £30 each fitted and balanced. Why would anyone pay £98 or more, unless you run a business and want to off set your profits against tax?

Are you 12 years old? I hope your tyres have a better grip than you...

My point was that some people drive regularly on routes that are easy on their tyres where other people drive on routes that are harsh on tyres. My commute is on A roads in scotland that are typically windy but fast and, in the winter, cold. A straight drive up the M6 at 70mph would be significantly less demand on the tyres than my commute.
