Greyhound is great.
Went to Portsmouth with them a few months ago....free wifi and power plug is available if you bring you laptop.

Heat added - great deal just a pity they don't branch out slightly further north as the National Express £1 fare's run out so quick from here

Just keep an eye on them mate. Im sure you know greyhound are massive in america and the london to southampton/portsmouth/bournemouth is a test to see how popular the service will be over here. If they do well they will open more routes and buy more vehicles.

Typical Firstgroup - 0900 number to make telephone bookings

Heat added..Booked for Bournemouth

Greyhounds - great plush coaches -but once the cheap fares are gone their fares jump right up !

National Express - not quite as plush, but comfy and modern enough - gets you there for £1 each way on selected routes ( to and from London!) - only 55000 tickets available at £1, and a further 60,000 at £5 - with NO BOOKING FEE!

Costs less than a quarter litre of petrol - bargain!!

Brilliant for a cheap day out to 'the smoke', end of may bank holiday/ half term!
Just checked - loads available tonight - get in quick!

Your clearly online mate so why do you need to make telephone bookings?

gutting normally around 50 quid return for me on trains to my uni in bournemouth
with this it wud be about 20... wish i hadnt bought tickets already!

Agree with dh058977, and in some way ]MegaBus was the same when they first started off, now they are running to more destinations, even via ]MegaTrain. Though have to say, it is a pity even with ]MegaBus/]MegaTrain that they don’t do more destinations. But who knows?? Even ]National Express Funfares have branched out a lot more from when they first started.

Does anyone know of a cheap way to get from Portsmouth to Bournemouth or Brighton?

I want to go with some friends in May on a day trip (maybe one night), Bournemouth, Southhampton or Portsmouth? Haven't been anywhere yet. any recommodations?
Sun(..), beach, party, drinking, but a also nice city is definitely appreciated!

Bournemouth is probably where you want to be heading, if you want a nice beach. Portsmouth's beaches are ok, but all stones... not a huge amount to see in the city either. Spinnaker Tower is alright, but it gets boring after about 20 minutes (if not sooner...).

Bournemouth has an awesome beach, loads of places to drink, plenty to do.

Never stayed there though - little point, I only live an hour away - so can't recommend a hotel!

Did you know you can buy a Network Rail card or a Student Rail card and get a 1/3 off rail fares. It's almost worth it for one trip and the Network one is just a case of putting your address in:thumbsup:

Yeah but if that person is making that trip a few times a year they'd make that £25 back in the first couple of trips. Im at uni in coventry and im from southampton. i got a rail card and it paid for itself on the first trip.

£25 for South West Trains Network card 1/3 off peak travel and fares over £13 peak time

if you book at SOUTHERNRAILWAY.COM single train fares available London Victoria/ Brighton/ Portsmouth/ Southampton for only £3.00. much better than being stuck on a bus on the motorway perhaps, and quicker too.....

Looking at the state of some of the southern railways trains id much prefer to be on an air conditioned coach with free wifi and a large leather seat than on one of those

I use the Southern trains quite often. Okay there aren't in the greatest shape but they are perfectly adequate. Plus it is probably roughly a third faster to take the train compared to a coach.
Plus also if you have a student rail card than than it is only £2 each way!
But I got an email last week that I think was saying that the £3 fares are ending this month, is this true?

if you book before the end of the month, for travel thru July, the advance fares are £3 between london victoria and the south coast. This includes 40% additional discount on southernrailway.com, as normally the fare is £5,and you will pay £5 at the station or on other websites. Southern usually run a new offer every few weeks though...

thanks for this - just booked a nice cheap day by the sea for me and the kids in the half-term. so much cheaper and easier than driving all the way there
