I thought this was a bargain, working out at under £20 per person per night.

Escape to Shap Wells Hotel, which is set between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national parks, and save 55% on regular rates. This 2-night stay is £79 and includes:
  • Accommodation in a Double or Twin room, with daily full English breakfast, for two
Why We Love It
  • The hotel is in a secluded valley surrounded by fells
  • It's on the eastern border of the Lake District National Park and is five minutes' drive from the Yorkshire Dales National Park
  • The popular Lake District towns of Troutbeck, Bowness-on-Windermere and Ambleside are within 45 minutes' drive
According to The AA Hotel Guide 2017, "this hotel occupies a wonderful secluded position amid trees and waterfalls" in the Cumbrian countryside. Visitors have been coming to the area since the 1800s, when they used to take in the fresh air and bathe in the well waters for their health. Today, this hotel is surrounded by peaceful countryside crossed by bridleways, and woodland that's home to red deer and a colony of red squirrels.
The hotel is 20 minutes' drive from Lowther Castle and Gardens. This ruined country house was designed by Robert Smirke, the architect of the British Museum. The Daily Telegraph describes its restored gardens as "glorious". Alternatively, indulge in mint cake at Kendal, which is a 25-minute drive away, or head to Grasmere village -- popular for its gingerbread and gift shops, and home to Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Museum -- which is around 50 minutes' drive away. National Trust property Hill Top, the former home of Beatrix Potter, is an hour's drive.
The Birkbeck Restaurant serves à la carte and set-menu dining options, and carvery lunches are served every Wednesday and Sunday from 12:15-2pm. The Art Deco Riverside Lounge and Bar boasts views of the beck and the surrounding fells. You can also unwind in the Salterwath and Fell Bar lounges, or in the hotel foyer with its roaring log fire.
There is a games room with a full-size snooker table, table tennis, a pool table and darts equipment. You can also use the small gym. Wi-Fi is free.

This hotel is ok. But, I note it says that internet is provided …This hotel is ok. But, I note it says that internet is provided throughout. When I stayed there I could not get internet to work at all. After a lot of searching and phoning I established that the remoteness of the hotel meant that it was somehow fed internet access on some sort of limited basis. The bandwidth allowed for that month had been used up and that was that until next month. It may have changed now, but if you really need to stay in contact via internet, then you may wish to establish that wifi is indeed going to be what you think it should be. The manager there, a charming man, but certainly no tecchie!

Who needs internet when you seeing the mistress. Just tell the mrs you on a business trip, team building weekend

I could happily go on holiday by mistake there.

We got full bars internet the entire time. Must have fixed it. We stayed in the outbuilding with the dogs too.

Just stayed here on buy a gift offer. Couldn't fault it for the money. Yes it is dated but so quiet and relaxing. Other guests are mainly coach trips of pensioners. The breakfast was good. Hotel was toastie warm. Good internet access despite seriously being in the middle of knowhere. The location is amazing. Breathe taking views. Dog friendly. Evening menu a bit limited. Took our own food back the second night. Worth a trip.

Going on a work-funded vocabulary and grammar training weekend may be more believable.

One of several nice area's to visit and a good deal.Sadly the drive up from Hampshire puts me off.

When I stayed there a few years ago it felt like something out of faulty towers. I would recommend eating at the bar rather than restaurant (ballroom). WiFi was sporadic but hotel was clean. I believe that there are red squirrels in the surrounding woodland but it truly is in the middle of nowhere.

Yes Mr Grammar Sargent, get a life while I am on the course ...

If you’re going to attempt a needlessly offensive response, at least spell ‘sergeant’ correctly.
