I'd thoroughly recommend the city and the tour of Auschwitz. Very humbling and shocking. An important part of history which we can all learn from.
Just go. I'd never fancied any of these Eastern Bloc countries. I happened upon a similar deal to this about 3 years ago and have now been 4 times. I promise you will love it. The Jewish Quarter is fantastic, a bit run down, in a nice way, but full of character and jam packed with cheap bars and restaurants. Auschwitz is a really sobering day but really enlightening. The Old Town Square is beautiful (The Wodka cafe bar is a must visit)...

...I could go on but meh, just go already

Just looked and wyspianski hotel is in a perfect location. Right by Old Town and about a 10 minute walk/3 minute taxi ride (less than a fiver, probably about £3) taxi ride to the Jewish Quarter and 6 minute walk to the Blue Van sausage men

This sign really stuck in my mind when we visited it.

A lovely city and Auschwitz is a place EVERYBODY needs to go and visit, a true reminder of what could have been and how lucky we are.

Puts a lot of things in to perspective.
2 Nights is definitely too short.
You can book cheap flights and accommodation yourself without Groupon.
November is cheap but the weather normally isn’t that nice. Go Spring, Summer to early Autumn for nice warm sunny weather or December January for cosy proper winter.
Wizzair fly Luton->Kraków, Ryanair Stansted -> Krakow, EasyJet Gatwick->Krk, as well as many other airlines from different airports in the UK. Use Skyscanner for comparing.
There is something like 2000 short term accommodation (hotels, b&b, apart-hotels and etc.) so there is massive variety / selection, you can search and compare on Expedia or HotelsCombine for example.
Trip to Auschwitz you can also easily book yourself in any tourist place in Kraków, online or in hotel. It is only about £20 to £50 depending on the group size (2-8 ppl), or free (Museum entry) if you go without guided tour (but I don’t recommend this as can learn much more with). 1,5 hour is too short for Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Heat added for Kraków

Nice people too from what I’ve seen which is more than I can say for some of our neighbours here in England

Been there once...natzis were not humans!!!

People whose knowledge of history starts and stops with the Nazis are exactly what makes their repetition inevitable.

The Soviets and Ottoman's all seem to get a free pass from kids today, the same kids who compare these camps to some temporary caging on the Mexican border.

Most major countries including this one have had their hand in the mass killing of people, and nearly everyone has persecuted the Jews at some point.

There was nothing uniquely inhumane about the Nazis, they were just a good example of humans with absolute power.

Also hanging this millstone of shame around the neck of the modern German people is creating knee jerk reactions and massive social unrest in Europe today. Please stop doing this.

[...] We always need reference points to push us towards hitting targets, …[...] We always need reference points to push us towards hitting targets, this is an excellent one when it comes to civilisation.

I'd agree that there is a need to have a permanent physical record of these events,
but I also think it has simplified into "This is what the Germans did, but we would never do that..."

And the same for Rwanda - "brown people, reasons"
Syria - "angry religious people"
Soviet Russian - "Communists"

We have to also understand the social and political issues that led up to these events, and not just associate them with a group of people we pretend we don't have much in common with.
The fallout from these events is that descendants sometimes use their history as a get-out-of-jail-free card when they are badly behaved, this also needs to be called out.

Every conflict gets to be recorded as a moral victory by the winner.

No, the most disturbing thing was that the Nazi thought that others were not human.

I don't think anyone hangs the millstone of shame around modern German's necks any more. Anyone with half a brain cells knows that these aren't the same people, nor do they have the same mindset as those from 80 years ago.

Having been to S1 and the killing fields I can assure you one torture center and death camp is enough for one lifetime. What really brought it home was that this actually happened in my lifetime.
freyabo19/07/2019 21:24

Why "always London" what?

Because it's close and have more flights. Stansted flies 7 days/week 3 times a day to Poland (and that's just Gdańsk) Bristol/Birmingham flies only 2 times per week. So obviously London flight prices will be lower.
So tempted. We went to Krakow a couple of weeks ago and I totally fell in love with it. The Jewish quarter has a lovely atmosphere in the evening and so friendly. You get so much for your money, the food and flavoured vodkas are fab. Visited Auschwitz which was extremely moving especially the gas chamber which still haunts me now. The salt mines are really good too. And definitely make a visit to the lody shop. We loved it so much we’re taking the kids next year.
Where else is good to go in Krakow?

They say they don't but mention any event from history and the people of that country are expected to prove they are not like that.
Mention slavery and every white American is expected to accept responsibility for it.
Mention colonialism and every European is expected to accept responsibility for it.
Despite being born 100 years later and having nothing to do with it...

You can see it now in Germany where they fall over themselves to be inclusive as possible,
it's all an endless cycle of proving "they are not like those people".

And all that happens because some people point the finger at a single identifiable group and declare "This is what they did, but we would never do that..."
When history clearly points out that everyone can and will do that, only the reasons for it vary.

Not been there but try the beef stroganoff,
and there is a salty cabbage and sausage dish which is really nice (found a tin of it in Lidl one day, but I can't remember if it had a name).

I imagine anything you can find there is now available in the UK (or at least in my area)
Tripadvisor will tell you

Also did TopCashback too so with the discount on the Groupon deal and then the £13 TCB it has cost £97 for 3 nights, Flights, tour and accommodation!

Brilliant Deal! Heat Added!
Sounds thoroughly depressing to me. Think I'll skip it.

Was?youre talking to me???!!!
I'd thoroughly recommend Auschwitz too. A room a big as my house filled with children's shoes and another with harvested human hair. It was horrific, but in a way which makes you glad you've been I'm desperate to take the wife and kids, but 'not her idea of a holiday'. If you go, you'll be pleased you did...
Something I need to do one day. Got two small kids so no chance of that for a while.

I can only speak for myself but i really don't think it's a place for kids. At least until they're teenagers and then only for educational purposes.

Thats what I mean. Wouldn't go now. Either on my own or when they are much older.
A nice uplifting break.
Polands got plenty of great things to visit this isn't one of them

Sorry unpopular opinion
I thought I knew everything about the Holocaust having read and watched a lot, but then I visit Auschwitz and I realised I knew nothing.
Can't fathom the place until you visit and you come out with a new appreciation of life and the little things.
Having said that, krakow itself is my favourite city in Europe, and that town square, I can spend all afternoon there...
One of the most beautiful cities in the Easter Europe. Cradle of history here. You can go here for many times and every single of them you will find something new that you will take with you. I do recommend visit Poland and Krakow. 10/10 experience do not hesitate guys.
So I'm all booked up for November. The catch is - the included flights are at insane times of day , leaving at midnight and returning at six in the morning. Meaning a two night trip leaves you no time in Krakow other than the Aushwitz trip.

You can then pay for a better flight time but that increases the cost by £40 per person. Bah.
