Have a generic smart plug but quite a size and makes the socket protrude quite far from the wall. These look a lot better, sleek metal finish, no need for a hub and with an additional USB port. £14.50 per plug in this twin pack surely a great price.

The issue with smart devices that don't require a hub is your then reliant on a persistent connection to a remote server somewhere (usually in China) When the server goes down you get no operation (as happened over Christmas)

Is that why my hs100 tplink failed briefly over Christmas?

What you do is control them locally with something like Home Assistant and then stop them calling home all together, as long as your wifi stays up you're fine.

That's why I would look at something like a Sonoff S20 plug, which can be run in local network mode and Home Assistant, or go for a RF plug instead.

This is why the sonoff is good. Who knows what's inside these sockets, which is a shame because I'm tempted by these for the usb socket

Unless you can flash them with a custom firmware then that wont be possible, they need a persistent internet connection.

Devices with their own hub will work with no internet connection.

That’s good info. Still for the cash I’d go with it for now. They look sleek and have the usb.

Have you actually tried it? Most no names like this that work with Alexa use the same system which HA can control just fine as is.
You can flash sonoffs and use wemo emulation so no home assistant needed just alexa skill
Am I right in thinking these aren’t Alexa Certified? Meaning they won’t be controlled directly under Alexa Smart Home but instead via a skill?

I thought the sonoff plugs were the same cheap Chinese plugs off banggood...etc.

The name is what you say when you come home to a burnt down house.
