Just done a oil change on my BMW f31 330D and it takes 6.5L of C3 oil (LongLife 04).

Castrol is found cheap in most places now and then but C3 spec I find is never reduced as I do over 1000 miles a week so choose to oil change and oil filter every 10,000 instead of bmw recommended 19,000.

BMW want £120 for a oil change and DO NOT record it on you idrive (service book) either.

This oil is £38 and get a filter for my car for around £8-£11.

£50 for parts
Labour free
My local garage qouted me £30 for 30 min job most people can do if you have a Jack and axle stands.

I plan on doing around 5 oil changes a year at £50 each (£250)

compared to 5 X £120 ( £600 )

I'm saving £350 a year if I got a garage to do it I would still be on a £200 saving

Dont get confused by the always cheap A3/B4

THIS IS NOT A3/B4

HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE

250+250=500?
These were £17.50 in Halfords the other day.
I use a cheaper ll04 under the same deal oil (£14 for 4l ) - not sure this is worth the extra but I have an older bmw and I don't have stop start (e65 3L diesel),
I like change my oil every 5000 miles but I don't change the filter until I have done 25000 which makes the oil a little dirty but I believe less damage as I beleve the dirt gets in when removing the filter.
140000 miles so far (I did 280000 in my last BMW (e39))

I’ve had my F30 330d for over a year now. I’d recommend buying the bimmercode app with an obd adapter and then you can program the awful start stop function to be switched off by default. The 3 litres are pretty bullet proof and don’t suffer from the dreaded timing chain issues that seem to plague the 2 litre diesels. Make sure the egr recall has been done (assuming its a pre September 2015) and it’s worth changing the zf transmission oil at least every 60,000 miles (bmw say it’s sealed for life and never needs changing which is utter nonsense). Hope this helps.

Its went in for that recall and said everything was fine and didn't need anything than soon as it come out about 3 weeks later the engine light will come on for about 100 miles then stay off for about 2-300 then back on....its apparently something to do with airflow the code its reading.

Is it easy to change the gearbox oil? as I'm on 110,000

There are tutorials on the forums and YouTube for the transmission oil change. Failing that there are many specialists out there that will do it, as the zf gearbox is used in so many cars. The biggest cost is the oil.

Dirt gets in when removing the filter?
Really?
I've never known that before and certainly when I change filter I keep things clean. I thought filter was to catch small debris produced as a result of friction and any sludge.
To me changing oil filter is as important as oil.

mine is on the top of the engine - as you remove it the oil from both sides drops down as well as any dirt that was on the casing when you unscrew it, not a precise job. I always used to change the filter until I had an old honda CX motor bike and was told that you should not change the filter as it was more likely that the filter would get sucked into the engine and if you did feel you had to change it only use a good quality one, taking this advice I only changed the filter once and did 50000 miles without any engine problems, my guess is that if your engine is wearing in then you need to change it but at 100000 miles I suspect there is nothing to filter!

I was told to do the gearbox oil at 80 and don't do it if you have done more than 120 , anyway I have done mine twice now second time to replace the rubber parts as on mine these need doing and I didn't the first time, annoying job as the car takes 14 liters of oil but you can only get 7 out plus the oil cost £15 a liter ! (and the gearbox filter is £80)
only advice is don't let anyone put the wrong oil in !
May stock up, if my N18 doesn't use 8l on a change it'll probably burn through the rest
