I refuse to shop at scan again, shocking returns, they will do anything they can not to pay out.

I had a fault with my internal blu ray and After 2 weeks of them having my item and 3 calls to the call centre (which the returns dept never pick up) they eventually sent me another one which is great , but 2 weeks layer with no CD drive for my PC

Anyway cost me 5.00 to ship and 15 calls and several email and still no 5.00 refund.

I wont be buying from them again, will pay extra for amazon or novatech's customer service.

Type in returns complaints for scan in google and you will see.

I'm afraid I've had similar experience with Scan.

They give great pre-sales advice though! I often phone them for advice then buy elsewhere

Hot deal though! Heat added.

Excellent price, really tempted but the Scan bit puts me off.

I cant belive AV FORUM supports them so much.

Great pre sales and price and advice, why cant they get that little thing called after sales right.

The returns department are full of crooks that want to keep your money.

Good deal and I've never personally had an issue with Scan. I'm pretty confident that if you type any company name along with the word complaints into Google you'll find a lot of unhappy customers so I wouldn't put too much stock in that to be honest.
Not great to hear that people have had issues though.

I know the Amazon deal is over now, but would I be right in thinking that the warranty with the scan ones are with scan but the warranty with the Amazon one is the proper Samsung warranty.

Thats correct, I got one from amazon a 1tb f3 and it registered with samsung.
I got one with scan and samsung would not let me register.

Thanks, just need the Amazon ones to drop below £60 again now.

As far as I know /Z4 on the model number means it's a refurb. Owned.

I was under the impression that /z4 means grey import.

That would make sense as to why it could not be registered with samsung (grey import)

Correct. It is NOT preowned (who the hell would sell preowned HDDs?). They are 'grey imports'. The warranties are with Scan not Samsung.

Please remember that Amazon's packaging for HDDs can be absolutely awful. If you do buy from them, make sure you don't get the "frustration free" packaging.

Satan, yes that worries me also. Do you know where I can get non grey imports and correct packaging for similar money.

I was also wondering this, and I found ebuyer have it at £60:

ebuyer.com/pro…908

Though I haven't yet purchased, due to issues with my mobo (I have a Sandy bridge mobo, so I'll be holding off till they fix the SATA issue in a couple of months).

If you do go ahead with them, it would be worth emailing them to check if they are grey imports (I doubt it), and over what packaging they use.

Also, note the warning on their website, that ALL of these drives manufactured prior to December 2010 have a firmware issue, which requires a firmware update, which you'll have to do yourself:

samsung.com/glo…386

This applies to the Scan & Amazon drives aswell. Hopefully when I purchase in a couple of months, the newer drives not requiring the update will be in stock.

It's a shame about all these niggling issues with these drives, because they actually seem to be great pieces of equipment for the money.

I got 2 of these for £119.99 a few weeks back, on the similar Scan deal. The packaging was excellent, although the warranty is with Scan. This is a good deal. Gonna get 2 for my new D-Link NAS

Edit: Meant to add, the firmware update was very simple to perform in my desktop, with a bootable USB stick. Not sure how easy it will be in the NAS.

Saw that but in the discussion part there's comments on receiving z4's which were ordered this month.

Thats going to be a problem for me then.

sorry for the dumb question but whats grey import?

read through the thread and ppl say its not a pre-owned drive =)

but i dno whats grey import =/

google:
A parallel import is a non-counterfeit product imported from another country without the permission of the intellectual property owner. Parallel imports are often referred to as grey product, and are implicated in issues of international trade, and intellectual property.

who tha hell know what that means =/

this may be a good upgrade for my external 500GB Bufalo RAID drive. BUT i cant imagine how long it would take to rebuild the data on a 2000GB drive. i have to do a rebuild about every 3 months as the drive thinks one of the drives has failed. it take about 30 hours to rebuild 500GB! so 2TB will take 5 days?? sometimes smaller is better. lol

@AznAssassin i think grey import means it was for release in another market i.e. not UK. so the manufacturer may not offer a warranty if its a grey import..i believe scan offer their own warranty.
Edited by: "northerngeek" 22nd Feb 2011

Nice, I'd be cool with one of these - don't think I need 2 lol

OK, ordered 2. Forgot that I used to be an avid member of AVForums! Free delivery and decent packaging sealed this deal for me.

It is just a grey import here in the UK, that's why it is cheap

Me too, I don't run Windows and would only be able to attach these using FW/USB enclosures.
