:gift:

why an we not vote of this?

Good deal, GTs, Carrera and Boardman are the only good bikes sold there.

Im kinda ashamed that i work there tbh lol.

But yeah get yourself an agressor, exactly the same as the avalanche but a name change so halfords could claim exclusivity

Good deal on a quality brand and a great entry level MTB.

i have the avalanche and its a top bike!

Looked at these when looking for mine, these are almost the same as the avalanche but with some cheaper components. Personally I would look at getting an avalanche 3.0 which would be roughly the same price but things like shocks and brakes are usually better (the halfords ones I've seen save some cash using cheaper components here and there).

All in all you can't fault GT's though!!!! ;-)

well I take your word for it on this one but yeah generally after my expereince i now consider all Halfords bikes as ****

I bought the Apollo XC26S last year feb, ive replaces the back wheel from a wobbly fault , front disc brakes have never worked, the guy said they have to wear in BS. I've had the back brakes replaced because they were knackered, Now my bike is currently making grinding noises if im not pedalling.

Personally I would suggest you go to your local bicycle shop.

Theres your 1st mistake. You bought an Apollo.

But yes, quite a lot of their cycle technicians, as they are now called, don't have a clue about bikes. I know, I used to work there too way back in my late teens. However, I always felt it was my duty to inform people of what they were letting themselves in for with the budget bikes. I wouldn't write off all their bikes though. Some of those Carreras are very well spec'd/built for the money and Saracens used to be good too (don't know what they are like these days though).

As for GTs, I can vouch for them. My latest one is a 2008 Avalanche 1.0. Well built/spec'd bike for the money and has stood up well to a fair bit of punishment from my poor downhill riding skills.

Seems like they don't update their site - past Easter now...

or do they mean Christmas 2009? Nine months seems a long time to hold "free storage".....

or do they just want to take your money.... and you have to hope they are still there in 9 months time...... not a good idea with the economy what it is :whistling:

GT make decent bikes. The 20% discount should make 2009 prices what they were in 08.

I have had a Carrera Vortex from Halfords for about 11 years now.

Okay so it is not changing gears so well anymore despite a service a couple of years ago but it is still up an running.

Fantastic bike.

I did buy a Cube Acid bike a couple of years ago after the gears went a bit on the Carrera but 9 years out of a bike from Halfords is not bad going.

Yeah, GT's and Carrera's are alright... it's the Apollo's you need to stay clear of...

GT's used to be superb. Than I think they ran out of money, and were bought out some years ago.

Now they make decent bikes at the entry level. If spending under £500 on a bike, they are well worth considering.

I've still got a 1996 GT Pantera. Aluminium frame is light and strong still, and with modern components would hold up well.

I just can't believe decent bikes are stil over £300. Man look at how they are constructed and they are just basic parts thrown together. Am I tight?

Bikes consisting of basic parts thrown together are less than £300. If you want a reasonable quality frame with a decent group set (gears, brakes, chainset etc) you're generally looking at £300 min.

GT bikes are pretty damn good. I don't know the Aggressor line but I have the Avalanche which is excellent.

Looking at the specs, they seem to have all the right parts (meaning quality, rather than two wheels and handlebars.

hmm I did spend £140 on the bike, to me that was expensive but ive spent almost £100 on repairs and it's still is poor shape. If I get another bike ill spend £300 and ask around on a good one, I want this one to last at least another year hopefully, the grinding noise it driving me nuts. I use my near everyday, all year round. No major trips just going round uni and sometimes into the city centre.

Spend a bit extra an get the GT Aggressor XC 2 from Halfords. Its worth the extra for the 27 speed gears and the hydraulic discs. Those extra gears make a difference on the uphill sections.

I know this is not really in this thread but I was looking for a bike for my fiance and I wasn't sure of what size I would need for her. She is 5'2 and her leg is somewhere about 28"-30". I wasn't sure as some of the ladies bikes seem to be sized differently. Am I right in thinking something about a 14" or 15" ladies bike would be right?

15" sounds spot on, do a couple of google searches for bike sizing charts. some of the big bike websites have a sizing chart too

I had my bike stolen last week and am struggling to find more than £200 for a new one. Saw the Raleigh Pioneer U1 Commuter Bike as potential, affordable, replacement (apparently 50% off at Halfords at £189.99). Is this now looking like a bad deal? just looking for everyday road cycling - commuting to work and back.
