I was looking at the Nextbase 512GW dashcam at £149, but the 412GW looks great at this price. My mate is going through a messy insurance claim and I've been meaning to get one for a while so have just made a purchase.

Great value at this price and cheaper than Amazon too.

I wouldn't take advantage of any insurance discount, the chances are that they will expect to see footage in the event of a claim. The problem there is that it may have failed (card error), or you may have forgotten to put it in the car etc, you may also have footage that shows you were actually to blame etc (e.g. the other party may have pulled out on you, but you may have been doing say 32 in a 30, which could make you partly at fault). Its better to have it as an optional witness as opposed to an enforced grass

These are good, Ifrom my experience so far:

Drop the sensitivity down to LOW as otherwise it will fill the card up with recordings of pot hole impacts.

Be sure to connect this to a PC every so often because if the battery goes flat, it sometimes refuses to start up when powered by the car.

Check your card frequently, it can get full of protected files which then results in a very short record cycle.

Other than that, it's been great, I was worried that it would be a faff to take in and out of the car and expected it to be one of those things that gathers dust after a few months. To be honest, it's next to the keys and it's now second nature, to the point that I actually feel uneasy without it, just don't become one of those YouTube pillocks who uploads every "near miss"

My worry with a dashcam worth £100 plus is surely people going to pop your window for them? Or do you have to set them up for every journey?

Pity it hasn't got the smart parking which I've seen on others, say in a car park and it will only record if the g shock detects, others start with motion detection or record at 1fps, much better in my view at recording something worthwhile

I agree markrduk, however this one has the magnetic charging mount so you can just pop it on and off as needed. It would certainly be a pain otherwise.

I have a forward-facing Nextbase 512gw and a rear-facing Nextbase 412, my car like all in my street is parked on-street I've never experienced any issues and I live in a city. Its perhaps because my car is alarmed and has small stickers on the windows advertising this. I have also spoken to other dash-cam owners who have not experienced a theft issue however the same can't be said for those who have stand-alone Sat Navs which are prime targets for car thieves... also my dash-cams do not require to be set up for every journey can't speak for other makes/brands..hope that helps!

What was that dash cam for £6.99 the other week? Is that still available?

ScroopEgerton

I wouldn't advise getting a very cheap dash-cam the picture quality will be inferior and what you really want is the dash-cam to work when something goes wrong either when you are stationary in your vehicle or to provide decent footage when you are moving and/or during the day or night. If you get a cheap one you may find you should have spent more because if it helps you when you really need it, its priceless, without it you are possibly in a slanging match with the other driver which is no use.

Same as itjoe said, it's got a magnetic mount so it's no hassle, the settings etc are saved (or st least they have so far for me), the only issue I sometimes have is a bit a delay on the gps

These have a battery fitted which by design hold power for approx 6 minutes. This is so that when you turn it off it can properly close the last file recorded. I started having issues with my dashcam, it would not come on when the ignition/power was applied. Nextbase informed me the battery was the problem. As it was two months out of warranty they said they would not repair it free of charge. They said as an offer of goodwill they would send me out a replacement battery for me to fit myself, or alternatively they would repair it for £31 + the cost of post to/from. I opted for the battery, they supplied instructions. It involves prising open the case and soldering, I actually just did it today. If you Google the problem there are loads of hits on this issue. I was rather miffed as this is not a cheap camera.

I used my 512GW to show the Police footage from an incident that had just happened. Connected my phone via the wifi and they were able to view the footage there and then on the phone.

As for it being nicked, i take mine out when not in the car and just put it in my pocket or in the house. I just leave the mount (which is all wired into the car) where it is behind the rear view mirror.

As somebody said, just make sure you drag everything off it about once a week and format the card in the unit after.

Had mine for months and so far i'm very happy with it.

Being new to looking at these dashcams, does the above apply to all of them.
I'd find it a real pain to keep taking the sd card out, drag everything off it to PC and formatting it every week.
Does having a larger sd card help?

Ditto, that's ridiculous. Why doesn't deletion cycle unless you mark them for keeping?

You only need to drag it off if you need to keep the footage. Most of the time the only reason a file is locked, is because you have been over a speed bump. If you leave leave loads of unnecessary locked files on the card, there will be less space on the card to record onto before it loops again and starts deleting unlocked files. This could cause premature card failure. Most of the time it won't be a problem but it is good housekeeping. I would do it every month. If there is nothing you want to keep then the formatting can be done on the unit, thus avoiding the need to take out of the car or connect to a PC. I trust this helps explain.

I only drag stuff on to the PC due to there being footage on it showing something nobody would believe me about unless i showed them hahaha

The incident the other day involving the Police meant i had to drag the video off it as soon as i got home anyway.

The rest of the time i tend to drag it all off, format inside the unit and then delete the previous weeks stuff about 7 days later. Last thing i want to do is delete everything and 2 days later get a knock at the door lol. Maybe i'm just over cautious.

Same deal at Halfords, and I'd stick to the 3 series, in the reviews they couldn't justify the extra on the 412 this time.

Perfectly said.

Overpriced trash

Here are a couple of reviews from YouTube (who do compress image quality down. Also neither video are in 1440p)

youtube.com/wat…-Ls

youtube.com/wat…lbE

I wouldn't say either was vastly better than the G1W which is less than half the price.

More pixels is great, but only if they are not interpolated from a poor image sensor, and the licence plate is only ever a few hundreds of pixels. I have suction mounts, and haven't had too many issues with them falling off. Stick on pads can 'melt' during hot summers. The mount is essential for keeping the camera stable and reducing shakes.

One thing I'm more sure of as time goes on is that to confidently capture licence plates you need 60fps. When a car is closing quickly (from behind or from from the front especially) 30fps captures what has happened, but rarely grabs the licence plate.

Everyone should had a dashcam just to record what is happening on the road and what they are doing when and if something happens. I use two, one pointing forward and one pointing backwards.

My thoughts exactly.
I have a house alarm, but i dont declare to my house insurance provider, just in case we are burgled and it isnt switched on

I have this exact dash cam and find it brilliant , the quality is brilliant for such a small cam , you forget its their after awhile and like something said it becomes second nature taking it out and putting it back in the car. I just need to hide the cables in the roof lining and run it down the side as this is the only thing that annoys me, having the cable from the cigarette lighter flapping around. I have the Sandisk 64gb SD card in it and it works like a dream, just remember these use a different SD card that can be continually written over the others will knacker very quickly.

This isn't particularly cheap. I got mine for £103 from Halfords a while back plus 10% off. Sainsbury's also had this one reduced to £89 I think it was a couple of months ago.

It’s a great dashcam, perfect quality, I got mine at Sainsbury’s for £79.99 great value for money

Yeah that's the deal I meant. £109 isn't particularly cheap. Same price at halfordseven

I've got this and it's pretty good! I've never bothered taking it out though. I've got a few roundabouts round my way where people don't bother giving way so driving is less stressful knowing that I have this recording.

How did you go about contacting them? I've got a battery issue, namely the battery doesn't work, at all, as soon as the power is removed, the dashcam dies. I've got the 402g

Bought a dashcam with capacitors not batteries to handle shut down process as the lithium batteries suffer in high temps. Came complete with hardwire kit, gps , 2 year warranty etc etc for just over £50 on Amazon lightning deal. Had a query on Motion Detection and supplier responded to email within 12 hours. Well satisfied. Looked at Nextbase and batteries seem fairly common issue plus very pricey, £109 seems to be the going price was when I bought 4 weeks ago.

High temp an issue? I took it with me last month to the US when I drove Route 66. I guess stuck to the windscreen of the hire car in 120° at Lake Havasu didn't help then? Hahaha!
