This is possibly the best food you can feed most garden birds, ive been paying £1.80 per kilo for a long time, Home bargains have recently started selling it for £1.69 a kilo so this is a great price, this is a really important time for garden birds as it will soon be breeding/ nesting time, people tend to feed birds mostly in the winter but birds often return to find empty feeders, this can affect the amount of eggs they lay, limit the bread you put out, not a great meal for chicks.

You can buy 'cheaper' mixed bags of bird food, there is no mess/waste with this, less chance of rats, if you have never tried it you should, you will surprised at the response.

Even better.:)

Been paying £2.50/kg for Asda smart price peanuts since the price doubled five years ago.

Would switch to bird food and snails but I've been reading up on aflotoxins or something, gives you liver cancer...

So, you're the one who's responsible for all the obese sparrows.

Aren't aflotoxins in peanuts? (Non-organic ones)

Good Spot...;)

Thanks OP - great find! (Heat already given).. Just ordered 20kg., although not looking forward to moving a 20kg bag!!

I've checked Ebay in the past but they've always been so expensive. Used to buy them regularly at Wilkinsons until the price-hike to £2.75 per kg a while ago.

Goldfinches love sunflower hearts. Unfortunately, so do the flying rats - will need more deterrents to repel the blighters!

thanks that is good price

Tremendous have some heat.

I buy sunflower hearts regularly and this is the cheapest price I've ever seen - have some heat. I've used this company recently and their sunflower hearts are going down fast!

For anyone that hasn't used sunflower hearts, they're far and away the best all-around bird food. All the finches and tits eat them, and the bits they drop are eaten by blackbirds, thrushes, dunnocks and pigeons/doves etc underneath - we've also had blackcap, brambling, siskin, lesser redpoll, and a red-legged partridge feeding on them! Also they don't make loads of weeds in your garden unlike other seeds.

The best feeders to use for them are the diamond mesh such as the Chapelwood Heavy Duty Sunflower Hearts Feeder - we get plagued by squirrels but they soon give up on these. I've had two of them for years which I alternate to try and avoid trichomoniasis and they're still as good as new. Hang them as high up as you can away from the house and in a tree if possible.

I have this type of feeder;

Would these sunflower hearts be suitable?

Great price heat added. Agree it's the best seed to offer as bird feed. No mess and attracts the best species to your garden. Goldfinch prefer this seed to any other seed despite what you may read elsewhere. Try it its the best.

Yes - I have one similar to this as well with smaller perches. I can't tell how big the perches are on yours - if they're big enough for woodpigeon and other bigger birds you'll go through a lot of sunflower hearts. If sunflower hearts get wet they can clump together, in the reviews of this feeder it says that water can travel up the feeder and damage the seed. Also, the one I mentioned above seems to be preferred by finches - they only start using the other one when the sunflower heart feeder has run out.

Of all the companies I never excepted to see on hukd, this one is near the top of the list!
They're a bit out of the way (Croston is the back end of nowhere, and this place is beyond that and then some!) but they always get my trade. Staff are great, product is great, prices are great.

Thanks OP. All I need is a bargain feeder now

Great price, I bought 60kg sunflower hearts from Croston last month and paid £64.95, at the time that was the best price I could find. This is an excellent price now, tempted to get some more.
The 25kg of peanuts have come down in price, I paid £29.49 now only £27.49.
An excellent company to deal with, have recommended to family and friends.

We have problems with pidgeons and starlings so o.h. bought a squirrel/large bird-proof seed feeder on Ebay from "Birdfeedersuk". It's well made and keeps the big birds out, allowing small birds in through small portals. They're not cheap (pardon the pun) but do the job. We've had it for over 1 year now without problems. There's a variety of other handmade feeders, made in Yorkshire.

I would never try to deter starlings from feeders, they are decreasing in numbers ( along with sparrows ) as people are sealing their roof tops, lofts, the most common bird I see now is probably the blackbird or collared dove.

Not here - we have huge numbers of starling and they and the pidgeons can demolish sunflower hearts in feeders in a few hours!
I do put other food out for them though, but try to keep the expensive stuff for the little garden birds!
Thankfully, I'm also seeing a larger no. of sparrows in my garden and hopefully after tomorrow's delivery of sunflower hearts, more goldfinches too

In addition to a fantastic price, Croston's service is great. Placed my order Tues. a.m., got confirmation text from courier about 2 hrs. later and the sunflower hearts arrived early on Wed. p.m..!

Thanks for the post, Avantime I'm surprised this deal isn't hotter.

Yes I probably get more goldfinches than anything else with these, they also love niger seeds. Really pleased with this company, 40KG delivered quickly.

Just noticed that they've increased the price to £24.75. It's still a bargain but I'm glad we got them for £20!

Update 28/3 - Now they've gone down to £19 !!
