this deal is good, the only problem being virgin media are rubbish at customer service and providing the speeds of broadband that you actually pay for

No problems here. The billing side is rubbish but a few calls and emails usully get it sorted.Broadband wise cannot complain at all.

Shame I can't get fibre... :-(

You sure your nothing thinking of VirginMedia ADSL? ?

Cable is spot on.

+£11 for the phone +18 months contract?

Been wih NTL for 5+ years - fantastic TV (even the free TV) and 20mb Broadband service.

Original Poster

The £29 per month includes the £11 line rental for the first 6 months

Broadband over cable is good, you actually get very close to the speeds they say, I was on 20Meg and regularly got 2Mbytes/sec DL speeds.

If you take out a Virgin credit card you also get £30 off your bill,

uk.virginmoney.com/vir…jsp

Make sure you put your account code in the box, make a purchase, any ammount, and pay it off, you only need to make 1 purchase on the card to get your £30 off, then cut it up !

On the website it says £17.95 amonth for 6 months then £27.95 a month after. BUT it has a * by the £27.95 which says "* When you take a Virgin phone line for £11 a month". Does this make £38.95?

Total contract cost is £550 approx

yes. did look good until I read the same TBH.

'No download limits1'

LOL!

(And yes, i know the 1 next to it leads to some small print advising you how this is at only non peak times which is like two hours during the day, buts its still rubbish), don't expect to get anywhere near 20MB for more than two hours during day time, if you want speeds that you pay for at all times (Which you rightly should expect) then avoid Virgin, there traffic throttling is ridiculous.

If your just surfing and downloading the odd file, you should get 20mb all day long... it's when you hit the cap (4gb?) that it drops to 1/4 (not sure) of the normal speed, which is still fast.... If your into a lot of downloading, leaving it overnight, it's fine - cos it goes back to 20mb around midnight (not sure of the exact time)...

So, if your counting, thats 3 facts i'm not 100% sure of.

I notice Quidco are saying that there is £80 cashback for signing up too

Must have DL'ed 500Gb off stuff, on 20Meg, never got a single letter or email to slap my wrist

£80 cashback through quidco.

29 for 6mths then 38 for 18 months

so will cost £630 over the term plus £40 install = around £630 in total

but you do get £80 quidco

doubt it... the bandwidth cap would of kicked it!

Is this for new customers only or can you switch if you're existing?

 Same here, Prob about 4TB over the last couple of years.

I get EXACTLY 20mb until the cap, then I get EXACTLY 5mb (I think)... after midnight, it's back to normal again.

none of this "how far your away from the exchange" business...

Ive got the 20MB service and love it never had any problems and i only pay £1.50 a month for it but thats cause i work for virgin mobile so get staff rate

If you choose the self install option you don't have to pay the £30 install cost, they just don't make that obvious, you'll just get a diy box with cables, modem etc..., but don't pick the morning or afternoon slot for delivery either as that charges extra too (about £7.50ish?) & the info on charges is hidden somewhere in terms&conditions that noone reads.

I'm on Virgin and have been for a few years,Theres no fibre optic cable here its still coax.I don't know how they get away with saying that.

Anyone who is an existing customer got this deal? I want to dump the TV, as we have all we need with FreeView and Broadband internet access. Any hints on how to get Virgin to swap me over?

Also, we are on 20meg and DL speeds are very good. Throttling starts at certain times of the day if you exceed the current limit (not sure about what those values are at present). When throttled you still have access sppeds adequates for surfing and for email, just not for heavy media downloading. Overall I have always been pleased with Virgin.

You hit your cap in about 20mins then get relegated to 2mb or something. Unimited my bell end.

I had 20MB from VM last year, never clocked it over 10MB on a speed test.

VM engineer came round to fix our TV signal and confirmed that the modem they use is ages old and 20MB was not even a consideration when it was made so they are definitely not up to the job, prob worth buying a decent modem if you want to maximise the connection

Sorry, that's just NOT TRUE on Virgin cable in my humble experience. You will get great dl speeds, but if you are downloading a lot of data (more than 3gig?) within their throttling times, you will (unsurprisingly) get throttled. Time it right and you won't. Strictly though, like all suppliers these days, Virgin won't let you run at max speed 24/7 and have set some timed limits. I think these kick in at 4pm... but as I have learned to DL in the mornings to avoid throttling, then no problems here

The fibre optic is under the ground, not in your house.

Remember that if you like downloading with newsgroups you can use the virgin server for free. Only 7 days retention but its still free!

took me 1 phone call to cancel my subscription in the 11th month, meaning that I have to pay for the 12th month, which they charged me and no problem ever after...

i know i am probably just lucky, but they have been fantastic... 1 phone call.. my cable, phone and braodband were installed within 2weeks... 1 phone call all mine were cancelled in 30min!

I pay around £28 a month for 10mb broadband and unlimted telephone and basic tv? Do you think i could get this deal? OR would i have to cancel and sign up again?
Thanks

Shame its available to new customers only. I would have liked another laptop.

It doesn't help to put NOT TRUE in capital letters. If you don't get throttled you must be an exception. I get between 3.8mb-4.8mb at 'full speed' and 2mb on 'throttled speed'. I am on a 10mb contract. I would not recomment to sign up with VM to anyone. O2 are much better (at this moment)- Telewest was good, and remember things can change quickly in this business, a long contract is not advisable, imo. I also think it is mad to put all eggs into one basket and take out all services from one supplier.

Good deal, but it would be better at that price for the life of the contract - I'd rather sacrifice the latop and pay less for the remaining 12 months tbh.

Do your self a favour. Download grabit, set it up for the vm newsgroups. Then download something. That way you can tell how much you are actually getting.

I get almost 20meg during the day (right up until I hit that limit) and the full 20meg at night, when everyones gone to bed. Customer service isnt that bad either. They fixed my net almost straight away when I phoned up to say it had gone down.

Set grabit to the max connections possible - i changed mine from 4 to 10 and doubled the download speed. Might have been coincidence, though...
