USB 2.0 / eSATA Portable Aluminum HDD Enclosure For 2.5" SATA / IDE Hard Drive in Silver

Super fast eSATA data transfer, up to 1.5Gbps (eSATA interface included)

Fast USB 2.0 high speed data transfer, up to 480Mbps ( Also compliant with USB 1.

Supports WINDOWS98 / ME / 2000 / XP / VISTA, MAC9.2 or above

I have bought three of these now for my drives that are lying around. They come with the enclosure, an esata cable and a USB cable. Also comes with a esata port adaptor that plugs into a sata port for your desktop that would go in one of the slots on the back of your computer.
With the esata connection I get write speeds of around 80-95MBps and read of just over 100MBps which is pretty fast I thought. You should also be able to just about get a 12.5mm hard drive in there as well. Cant go wrong for £5 delivered.

BACK IN STOCK in black this time.

That includes a link to something similar on ebay for 60% of the price. Any reason to prefer the amazon one?

Yes, this has esata which is considerably faster than usb 2. On par/faster than usb 3 speeds. Also this takes IDE draves as well as Sata drives. It will take IDE up to 150gb and handles my 640gb sata drive just fine. getting write speeds of around 90MBps. Significantly faster than usb 2

Got mine off ebay for £3, and gave it to my mate in the week

AGAIN, this is an ESATA enclosure. They are pretty much on par with usb 3 on transfer speeds and significantly quicker than usb 2!! Additionally they also take IDE drives... Also the cheapest esata enclosure on ebay is £7.50

I had a 640gb drive on a USB interface copying the drive took 18hours changed to a Esata enclosure and was copied the files in 3 hours!

This enclosure has both USB and Esata reviews are glowing.

I ordered 2! Heat added.

FYI win7 reports USB2.0 25 MBytes/s and SATA runs a 60 some Mbytes/s

damn, ordered the silver one yesterday , would have preferred black

looks like you'll have to post the deal every few days , this item seems to go in and out of stock regularly..

Very nice. Actually this is exactly what I need. I have a 2.5" IDE drive that I would love to hang off an eSATA port. Ordered, and heat added.

Yes, the exception is the Esata port on some docking stations. These only power up AFTER the machine has booted up making it useless for boot off ESATA.

If your computer supports ESATA and you are technically minded. You may want to check that ATA emulation is turned off (as ATA over SATA aka legacy is slower than SATA advance interface that supports NCQ etc) the is part of the AHCI settings in most BIOSs. You need to add the SATA drivers (AHCI) to Windows before you make this BIOS change otherwise Windows (XP, 7, etc) will blue screen when you try and boot off an ESATA drive, this includes the internal drive inside a PC or Laptop. If you change the BIOS to enable AHCI and Windows does blue screen, change the BIOS back to ATA emulation and it will be back to normal (ie slower ATA emulation).

I notice the newer i5 and recent mother boards / systems seem to default to AHCI enabled by default.

Some link on how to enable without needing to format

By the way, a single port esata bracket is included in the box.

From the reviews it's not clear if it supports ESATAp, referencing a USB Power cable that has to be used in ESATA mode.

It would also not appear to contain any bridge hardware to hook up the IDE drive to the ESATA port, they are USB only.

Need to buy an esata cable (unless you go usb, ofc) or is that also included in the box?

It is included in the box, as is a usb power cable and usb cable, and a esata bracket for your desktop if you need it.

For reference; 12.5mm drives do NOT fit in this enclosure. wasted my time and money on this.
