Model: Hitachi Coolspin - HDS5C3020ALA632

General Information Capacity 2 TB
Interface SATA
Buffer Memory 32 MB
Size Standard 3.5-inch (desktop) form factor

UPDATE: Just realised the mistake on the interface: SATA III 3.0 Gb/s. Copied from PCW site.

Should have gone to Specsavers. This should be SATA III = 6Gbps. Theoretically but you won't come close to those speeds in real life usage.

It's cheaper on Amazon.

I don't know why either, I've ordered 2 and heated.

I guess the magic 100 makes all the difference?

Cold because I worked for PCW and they're just god awful, buy from amazon for the good of all mankind

After having two Hitachi Deskstar drives fail on me I would never trust my data to one again. Never been let down by Western Digital so wouldn't buy anything else when it comes to hard drives.

Shame, I don't know how to put in my PC case.

SATA III3.0 Gb/s

/facepalm

Got this from Ebuyer for the same price a while ago. They're much faster than than WD Green.

+1. Idiots.

I just ordered one to go in a NAS
I'm thinking of ordering a different drive from a different manufacturer so that I can RAID them without the risk of getting two drives from the same batch and having them both fail on me.

Now I just need to get a decent two bay NAS (perhaps a DLink 320 or something)
Why are there no NAS deals when I want one! There were loads a few months back, now everything seems stuck at the £65 mark!!

Anecdotal evidence is a poor guide to buying any form of hardware.
Either use the results of official, large scale surveys, or buy what's cheapest.

It's not like brands mean much in the world of computer hardware nowadays anyway, as many brands are just labels stuck on generic hardware manufactured in the same fabrication centers.

:edit:

btw, don't forget quidco cashback of 3%

The 4/5 bay HP Proliant microserver is still available here.

Not a cheap NAS, but infinitely more capable & a bargain at £121 (after £100 cashback from HP)

SATA II = 3Gbps
SATA III = 6Gbps
Hot though

Hi,
why don't you recommend PCW, are you allowed to give any reasons.

dcx_badass

Ahahahahaha hard drives don't even get close to maxing out SATA2 … Ahahahahaha hard drives don't even get close to maxing out SATA2 nevermind SATA3, go do some research before you talk rubbish. A lot of SSD's don't even max sata2.

hes not talking rubbish - just clarifying the (theoretical) interface speeds which pcworld messed up.
ahhaaha...ahaha ..ah.oh

Nice deal - I think I read somewhere that the failure/RMA rates on Hitachi drives are amongst the best or even could be the best ... or maybe I imagined it.oO

THIS! (below) is an awsome dealio. paired up with these HD. kickasssss. £320 for 8TB NAS/Server.

That is hot. Well done that that man, that pointed out the HP proliant microserver. Some how i missed this.

For all those concerned at the lower rate 3Gb sata transfer rate, bear in mind that this is a 5900 rpm drive. This is in no way going to limit the read write speeds. (confirming - "ynwa8")

Having said that, Its not a samsung F4. I myself would recomend one of these over the drives above (It has 3 platters(disks) that allow faster read write speeds of around 300mb compared to 171 MBps. (the best 1TB on the market at the moment are samsung F3- see PC pro, or any other hardware comparison. The F4 is just an exension of this)

Whilst the hitatchi is £50 - the F3 is £6 more. This means it depends on what you want to use it for, fit it to its purpose. if im def gonna have the thing for 3 years min, then i dont mind paying £6 more for double data rates (please correct me if im wrong(or at least somone confirm what im saying on these double data rates)

Just to point out a few things - this model is SATA 6Gb/s (though that won't be much use) and it has 3 platters ...

Hahaha... Have you read any posts by dcx_badass? He is well hated around here... just saying (_;)

cheers "crofter" - point clarified. I couldnt find a link that said this was a 3 platter disk or the disk speeds (which as you rightly point out are very similar(like? added)

So tecnically (based on "crofters" sweet info, there is no benifit based on "tech specs" between the F4 and hitachi.

From the link above:
"Hitachi doesn't really say what kind of speeds the Deskstar 5K3000 is capable of. Using CrystalDiskMark we can see that the drive is able to read at 136 MB/s and write at 135 MB/s."

F4 - click this - same

sorry dcx_badass, i have dont know who PM is.... (possibly just being stupid, but not sure what "on ignore" is) (just an inocent question, dont wanna get dragged around in a flame war

2 ordered, £2.94 tracked with TCB Thanks OP

A cheap price no doubt, but when I had one of these very drives fail within a few minutes, I did a bit of digging. They do indeed seem to be unreliable, with numerous posts by people having the very same problem as me. There was also a report of one major US dealer experiencing a 16% return rate on this model.

Now, that was just one punter posting on a forum, so I can't vouch for the reliability of the report and the other failures could represent a very small proportion of the drives sold. Still, I felt other HUKD users should know what I've discovered.

You make your choice and take your chances, I suppose.

good price as it is good made

Thanks have some Heat from me!!

Bought and HOT!

are these drives reliable I haven't heard a lot of good about hitachi dirves

I dont work for them anymore so I suppose I can say what I want, they just treat staff very poorly which brushes off onto consumers leading to poor business.

Bought 2 to go with the one I got from Ebuyer the other week. Heat added.
