Before you buy memory, given you mention you're unfamiliar with the hardware just double check (a) your machine can definitely be upgraded as some now have some or all RAM soldered on internally, and (b) what capacity/arrangement of modules are currently installed (ie if you have a single 16gb stick then you could just put in a matching stick to make up the rest of the capacity); but my recommendation would be to used a matched set of memory and swap out the old set completely.
Also, if you do decide to go for memory with a higher speed like the one I've suggested (3200 Mhz), you will need to enable a setting in your laptops bias to get full benefits of the extra speed otherwise it will run at a stock speed of 2666 Mhz - search 'XMP settings Bios' and the brand of laptop you have and you'll probably find a guide or forum post if you're unsure how to do it.
