Yeah - if the pic is correct its the Huawei E5830 mifi adapter - but this is 2 models old so I would say £40 is still a bit steep.
Speak to 3 and see if they will do a free upgrade to a mifi for you - they did for me.....provided you are on a contract for your broadband of course.

i am but only pay £5 a month for 1GB, they always want to move me onto a different tarrif

i dont know yet if this device takes Giff Gaff data cards but this would be cheaper as £7.99 month with unlimited data

Yes, I also had this model and upgraded to the newer models. Agree that £40 is a bit steep for older model. However, must say that these are excellent gadgets for wifi ipad and playbook. I use all the time.

I think the main difference between this and the newer 585 that makes it better to get the newer version is that it displays the coverage as a proper bar graph, shows how much data Tx/Rx so handy to watch your usage but main benefit is that the 585 auto-reconnects if signal lost. I think this one needs you to push a button to reconnect. Can anyone else confirm that?

If you have a smartphone is there a reason why I would buy this over using the tethering option on my mobile that I already pay for?

I'm guessing possibly battery usage? Can anyone confirm how long these last for pls.

You may not have a smartphone with WiFi tethering, the data tariff on your phone may be expensive, it's separate (so you can position it for best signal) and as you mention, it allows you to preserve your phone's battery.
Personally, I wouldn't bother but each to their own.
