yes but 2 serires 2 phones come to £160

actually I think 3 are going to launch 2 for 99. keep your eyes peeled.

Could you give one of these phones to someone overseas and use the other one to call them using Skype from the UK ?

edit:

Could you buy 4 (2 packs) & call unlimited between them all - even overseas?

so is this deal gives the first version skype phones?

yeah but you'll pay a roaming charge unless these phones have built in wi-fi?

I'm wondering if I could buy this phone and use it just to receive skype in calls without having to top-up .. ever! ??

Is there a difference in call quality between the version 1 and the version 2??

yes - well that's what I mean - sorry.

You can't use another provider

I have some experience of using the version 1 skypephone. As long as you have 3G reception then the skype calling and skype chat works pretty well. However if you don't it's pretty much useless for skype. The other interesting feature is that the phone will work as a usb modem, and you can buy daily internet, weekly internet or monthly. If I remember correctly it's 50p , £2.50 and £5 (daily, weekly etc). The downside to the v1 skypephone is the low connection rate of 115kps and the fact that you have to install drivers and getting it to work on Vista is quite troublesome. (Although it can be done using the T-Mobile web and walk s.ware!). Msn messenger is also free on this phone, and you can watch TV stations on the phone. The quality of the unit is poor though, I've already sent one back under warranty and I got back a different phone which works fine but was in a very shoddy looking condition.

The skype works via the phone carrier mobile signal and not via wi-fi, and works in any country in which 3 has a network (previously listed in this thread).

The version 2 skypephone is far more interesting because it has a modem with built in drivers and it works at up to 3.6Mb and considering the what I regard as cheap internet tariffs from free it seems a no brainer if you want mobile internet access.

Top up and get free skpye, msn etc. The credit you topped up with stays and you can use it for normal mobile calls, texting, tv etc.

If you can live with the cheap phone and don't require fast mobile internet access. (Internet access on the phone itself is reasonable fast in a 3G network) and you will use the skype feature then it's great.

Personally I much prefer the spec of the version 2 skypephone. I'm completely ignoring the camera aspect of both phones are they are both pretty rubbish for taking photos.

I must stress the fact that the main selling point of this phone Skype and to some extent free msn messenger is only of any use if the phone or phones are in a 3G area, otherwise it's quite flaky and unreliable. You can talk and skype chat from a handset to a pc and vice versa, you can't make skype in or out calls, although there are work arounds on the net. The three skypephone forum is a place to visit for more info, there is a FAQ there >

you dont have to pay roaming charges if you set the phone to only use 3 in those countries I have listed - 3 call it "home from home"

rubbish phone compared to what else is out there, i was glad to get rid of mine.

i think this is a top deal- simply becuase of the free calls between the 2 phones

i mean other netwrosk would charge much more on a monhly basis- whilst this is a one of fee.
voted hot

however i have no idea how skype works, does it use wifi, how can it be free otherwise?

i found the call quality via skype on this phone was terrible, you have to be in a high reception 3g area for it to work well.
no wifi on the phone, skype runs through 3g.

I've had this phone for quite a few months now, and unless i'm very much mistaken, you have to top up once a month with £10 in order for the skype to work. Just a warning for anyone who thinks its a 'one of payment'.

The price displayed by you is misleading. They are always £69.99 as a double pack (well they have been for at least a month anyway)

Here is an explanation of the phones for those of you that dont know - no websites seem to make it very clear. You get free Skype calls to any Skype enabled phones / computers / laptops and other devices, not just limited between the two phones. The deal when you buy is you get a Pay As You Go phone to use as normal, plus 3 months free Skype usage. Then as long as you top up by £10 within 3 months, you get another 3 months 'free' subscription. So even if you are only a light phone user topping up say £5 a month, you can still take advantage of Skype for free.-----> I need to check this though, you may need to topup £10 in one chunk

How does it work?
Skype runs thorugh the 3G internet on the phone, this costs nothing because '3' (the network) allow you to use the Skype portal for free, along with a few other websites (such as Yahoo and Ebay). It DOES NOT work via Wi-Fi for this particular phone.

(I think I have the above correct, but correct me if I am wrong)

I think the idea of a Skypephone is great, the more people that adopt it the better - you'll save more money on calls and texts.

I can concurr with that, I have a contract Qudico of £32.50 being disputed because those knobbers declined me.

Quidco shouldn't be in the price because it's not guaranteed.

I'm suprised a mod hadn't changed it.

Im not sure about this phone
But my Sony K850i sends skype via normal phone line to three
then its converted to Ip from there onwards

which in my mind is better

I have just received a text message from Three that states Skype minutes (Maximum of 4000) now last 90 days after a £10 Top-up and are still valid even if you run out of credit.

It's a Wap bookmark so it may not display.

The "Check my balance" option on "My3" confirms it.

I bought 2 of these phones as a replacment 3 or 4 months ago as my contract phone ended up down the toilet!
They would not let me use the skype function with my existing contract after they told me i would be able to use the function.....and with PAYG you do have to top it up as above every month
also the phone is totally rubbish it has really fiddly buttons and is hard to write messages with, reception on it is terrible and often really crackly if you do manage to pick up a decent reception it cuts you off after a couple of minutes anyway and you have to ring back!
I REALLY WOULD NOT RECOMEND THIS PHONE IT IS REALLY POOR QUALITY EVEN BY 3'S STANDARD OF RUBISHY QUALITY PHONES.

Have got these phones myself, nice phones and skype works well.
BUT the better deal is to get 2x6 month contract at £15 a month for 300 min/txt (+300 three to three voice minutes) a month with a free skype 1 phone (I got two of these)
(this deal has been posted previously)

BIG BUT.....
However on pay as you go you only get free skype for 30 days after a £10 (or more top up), and I am currently have an argument with 3 because they keep charging me for internet usage everytime I use MY3 (the free service you can use to check your usage and remaining number of minutes). We shall see what happens!

I asked 3 about the signal problems and they told me they have a deal with ORANGE to use their network for regions with bad signal. So try changing the network setting to ORANGE (3G) and see what happens. Mine is much better.

Good luck

agreed! When they declined mine i set up a ticket with quidco to try and sort it out. But they wanted some strange number, which i couldn't find anywhere. So I just gave up.

They only use orange for when there is no 3 network coverage, it drops onto the orange 2g network.

Where are you reading this ?

Any "normal" credit left does not expire, but you will need to make a call once in a while :-)

Hopefully, Three's "T's & C's" will be updated soon.

Please please DO NOT get this phone. I have it and it is really poor. I cannot understand how it has received such good reviews from various websites. The phones are cheap, poor quality, and I am always worried that it will stop working (I am on my seco nd phone). To make matters worse 3 mobile are a terrible company in terms of customer service and reception, who have rude and aggressive call centre staff. I never usually post in forums but feel strongly. DO NOT DO IT!!

I agree with the comments about the phone being really poor quality, bought two for my daughters, both broke within 3 months, buy cheap buy twice

re 3 mobile- good value for money and never had a problem with the network

I'm unclear as there's a lot of conflicting information here. Could I give one of these to me Austrian girlfriend and call her free as there's no roaming charges for 3 in Austria?

This deal is hot to me especially as now three offers 90 DAYS FREE SKYPE USAGE FOR EVERY TOP UP. That's right, last time I topped up I couldn't believe my eyes...I need to put another tenner at the end of November. WOW!!!. That means you only need to top up 4 times a year.....That's a bargain to me.
