Morning all! This is my first HUKD post so fingers crossed this gets some heat! I’ve been researching Electric Bikes for many months as I’m looking to get one for my parents as a Christmas gift, and I’ve just stumbled across some great deals at Halfords (I’ll share another post shortly).

They have 2 x EBCO electric bikes @ £1099 from £1599. These bikes offer a mid drive motor - and it’s the cheapest branded mid drive bike I’ve come across. Specs taken from their website below:

EBCO USR55
  • Up-to 55-mile range with a removable battery that charges from flat within 6 hours.
  • Urban Sports Roadster T6 high grade aluminium Frame giving a stable and comfortable riding experience.
  • Headstock Suspension Fork enhances the stability of the front end whilst maintaining comfort
  • Shimano Deore 10 Speed Drivetrain for more precise gear changes
  • Powerful Shimano M315 hydraulic disc brakes producing efficient and effective stopping power
  • CST Xpedium line tyres with iron cap puncture resistant belt and reflective side walls for enhanced safety and visibility at night
  • TranzX PST M16GT 400Wh Electric Bike System function giving a smooth controllable riding experience.

EBCO MH5
  • Frame and Fork: Mountain hardtail frame with suspension forks built in T6 high grade aluminium giving a stable and comfortable riding experience.
  • Wheel Set: 650b Wheels fitted with CST Heathen puncture resistant tyres.
  • Electric Motor Drive System: TranzX PST 250W 36V brushless high torque M16GT middle motor with an integrated RPM sensor, precise motor controller and DP27 LCD display screen with 4 power support modes and walk assist giving a smooth controllable riding experience.
  • Battery: Lithium-ion 36V 11AH (400WH) frame mounted battery which locks securely and is removable for charging (charger supplied)
  • Range: 35-55 miles’ average range in eco mode (Range depends on terrain, temperature, tyre pressures, rider weight and level of assistance)
  • Recharge Time: 5-6 hours from flat. (Less from part charged)
  • Gear System: Shimano Deore 9 speed derailleur with Deore 9 speed Rapidfire plus trigger shifters for more precise and easy gear changes.
  • Braking System: Tektro hydraulic disc brakes producing efficient and effective stopping power.

If you are buying "one" for your parents for Christmas won't you need a tandem?
Just to note - some Halfords stores claim they don't deal with EBCO bikes when in fact they do (as they sell them on their site). So if you need repairs, make sure you stand your ground when arguing with the Halfords staff
Do they still have 10% off with British cycling too? The road bike is very tempting.
Probably worth checking if your company has a ride to work scheme, of if you work for yourself speak to your accountant - potential tax rebate
Congratulations on your first post.
I didn't know much about the TranzX hub motors so googled and one of the first hits I saw this text.

TranzX motors may also be found on Raleigh and Diamondback ebikes. Unfortunately, I have heard from users and some dealers that the TranzX system is also susceptible to a complete unit failure if used for heavier loads and climbing. I’m not sure exactly what the issue is but it sounds unrepairable and complete units have had to be replaced in many situations (so it’s nice that the unit is often warrantied for a year by the bicycle manufacturer using it).

So probably worth bearing this in mind if you are going to be using it off-road or are a heavier rider. Bafang units seem more reliable and have easy spares availability it's possible the TranzX motors are one reason for the heavy discounting.

Overall the value looks good but the TranzX motors would put me off as it looks like beyond the guarantee period the motor could be completely written off as unrepairable and need replacement and the bike frame could in some way be TranzX specific as a quick google shows no one selling a TranzX e-bike kit although admittedly the TranzX could just be a rebranding of a existing Chinese mid-mount motor that fits to most bottom brackets.

If you are buying an extended warranty if available on the motor would seem a good option.

Great deal, just so folks know if you order the bikes from Cycle Republic which is owned by Halfords using code SAVE80, you will get a further £80 off until the end of today.
