Hi All

Many of you i'm sure require fully sythetic motor oil for servicing, top etc..
Mobil 1, is usually the brand by choice but comes at a price! You would normally pay £12.99 a litre, or £40+ for a 4 litre bottle.
Costco, a membership required store, are selling these 4 litre bottles for £21.13.
Unfortunatley, they don't list all their items online, but i'm sure you are all likey to know someone who has a membership card..

Thanks

Yes cheekyboy this is the oil to use for home servicing...my last car, a Honda Accord, was sold a few years ago with 140k on the clock and didn't use a drop of oil...which I put down to using Mobil 1 for oil changes.

Hi cheeky

Is this the same as 10W40 engine oil ?

Thanks

10w 40 is actually part synthetic..

Is this price +vat or all in? cheekyboy.

I used to use mobil, but when I got a diesel with a 5.5l sump it got way too expensive having to buy 2x4l or a 4l and 2x1l, anyway this is a good price and I may stock up.

To be honest i'm not too sure..But even with vat on top it still only works out to £24 odd pounds.. its an excellent price!

I'm in the same situation...I have to buy 6.5 litres of oil for a full change...Thats potentially £85 just for oil!

With this price, it literally cuts it to half that...I have not found another distibutor selling for less than £40 (4 litres).

Anyone know if this deal is still on instore in Costco?

if you have an old banger and it runs ok dont bother changing the oil

Mobil 1 seems to be a constant stock product at Costco. It's been on sale for years at roughly this price.

till the filter collapses and destroys the engine, eh? please don't post crap like that

Actually if you have an old banger, regular oil (and filter) changes are the BEST way of keeping it on the road, so you don't have to go through the pain of a new car.... Cheap too.

Luckily, with the old fella being a mechanic, I get the pleasure of a 'five finger discount'

What an idiotic statement!!, Clearly you know nothing about engines!

Hope your happy paying a fortune in needlessly buying and scrapping old bangers because you don't do basic maintenance!!

We use Castrol GTX, Its ok but not the best stuff.

Halfords are doing 5litres of mobil 10W 40 at the moment for £18.39. I know this i have just bought some

Alot of misinformation in this thread!

10w 40 refers to oil viscocity at two different temperatures, it is NOTHING to do with fully synthetic or semi synthetic.

You can buy 10w 40 in both fully synthetic and semi synthetic.

Halfords are doing buy one get one free on 0W40 fully synthetic , think it was £32 for 10 litres , ok its halfords own brand but it will still be good oil.

mobile1 0-40w are £20 + vat in costco so its £23.50, but with 0-40 the oil is too thin for most cars, if you use this on a old banger it will just leak staight out within a week as the oil is too thin and will leak though old seals. newish Mercedes and BMW have to use this oil,

Was just about to say much the same... the only real case for using this low viscosity oil is in new(ish) proper performance cars - not boy racer pseudo 'performance' rubbish. Why? It's thin and hence will lubricate properly even at low engine temperatures. On normal cars, it's best to go for the manufacturer's recommended viscosity (e.g. Zetec engines need 5W-30). On old bangers and most engines that are old and leaky, a thicker oil, regularly changed (with new filter) is the best bet.

You must make sure you use the correct oil viscosity for the engine, manufacturers build and test their engines with a certain rating in mind and to use the wrong one is as bad as doing nothing. All oil is good and nothing can beat regularly changes for prolonging an engines life - some last longer than others though.

As for this deal - it's always been available for around that price level at Costco. It's a good price, but not exactly a deal.

National tyres do an oil and filter change for £20 semi synthetic £25 for fully synthetic 10% off that if booked online.Castrol oil
So not worth the trail to costco.

I think he might have been refering to the mobil 10-40, which is the not the synthetic variant

Fantastic value mobil1 is about the best oil within a reasonable price frame!
