Set back from the beach is a massive swimming pool criss-crossed by a bridge and bordered by thatched parasols. Keep walking and you’ll come to two more huge pools, plus a separate one for children.

As for dining, the two main restaurants have buffet set-ups. Expect American-style spreads in the mornings, with eggs and omelettes cooked any way you want. And for lunch and dinner, there’s a pan-global offering. You can go down the à la carte route, too, with Italian cuisine and grilled favourites.

Caribbean Street is well worth a look, too. This little road is shared with the neighbouring hotel Riu Bachata, and it’s lined with rainbow-coloured shops selling everything from chunky jewellery to sun cream.

Hi Stacey, any chance you can find some good deals for Mexico for me and partner in the first half of June? Looking at 10 days.

That is awesome!! Great deal!! I'm looking for June too as a surprise for my fiancé's 21st if anyone hears of anything

this place is amazing, went sept 2012 for honeymoon

Went on an all-inclusive to the Dreams resort in Punta Cana a couple of years ago. Swimming with dolphins at a sanctuary off-site was excellent, although I was in a group of about twenty and we had to take it in turns to do each manoeuvre with a dolphin (such as doing specific arm gestures to make it jump over your head or drag you across the water as you held onto its dorsal fin etc)

But DON'T fall for any local holiday rep offering to take you on a day's excursion to "local markets". Sounds great and a chance to see the real DR outside the resort, but we spent all day on a coach being taken from one tourist trap to another, even being taken to a specific jewellery store in a mall where the guide was obviously on a kickback. We wasted a full day of our trip.

Amazing deal Stacey. Can I just politely say to other users NOT to make requests to Stacey, she posts so regularly with great deals that we don`t want her put off by unsolicited requests either on the comments page or via messaging. You can always do your own research by going onto her link pages yourself. I did that and found an amazing deal in the Maldives and Kuala Lumpur for my daughter and fiancee for their honeymoon.

Stayed there in 2012 and really enjoyed it - optics in the rooms are dangerous though!

Only downside was the hordes of locals who get to use the resort at the weekends making the pools almost no go.

yea I agree but we read about this befire hand so we just hung around the beach these days because it did get swamped with locals with ZERO manners

dailymail.co.uk/new…tml

I lot of improvements have apparently been made since this article but would still read recent reviews carefully before booking.
Most of the problems in the article occur in the summer months as the Dominican hotels let extra guests in to make up takings due to low occupancy.
The Punta Cana / Bavaro region in the south of the island has taken most of the holiday bookings from the north recently due to better hotels and beaches.
Many hotels in the Playa Dorada / Puerto Plata area have closed due to this.
It is mainly Friday through till Sunday the overcrowding happens and as SunshineStacey has mentioned we also kept to the beach area out of the way during this time.
Luckily in the Iberostar Costa Dorada that we stayed at the influx of visitors at the weekend was considerably less.

Thanks Jon, as you will appreciate it would take me forever to search newspaper archives on every holiday I post, there are other hotels to choose from in a similar price range if your not happy with this one xxx

Stayed at the Riu Merenge some 15 years ago; beautiful place but certainly not without its problems. Pros: You can walk from swimming pool to beach in no more than a minute; great food and drinks, all-inclusive cocktails all day long; self-contained night club, if you like that sort of thing; grounds always well kept. Cons: rude staff; it's recommended you do not leave the hotel unaccompanied and for this reason excursions are expensive; on-site convenience store neither convenient or cheap.

If you go for this don't do the zebra truck tour - they will stop you at every deprived village and you are encouraged to throw your loose change to the begging children. They stop for lunch and water (included) in front of them and you just feel so awkward stood there with your fresh bottled water while they sip from some dirty stream...

We stayed at Dreams Punta Cana back in 2009, amazing resort.

My only minor gripe was the noise of the roof when it did rain was deafening overnight, but we changed rooms with zero hassle.

Not sure if most resorts over there are the same, but Dreams was a static all inclusive for everyone, there was no other option. It meant none of these wristbands or you can get this free but not that, all the bars and restaurants (of which there were 11) were free for drink, food, wherever, whenever, whatever. Made such a relaxing experience.

Also, to the original deal, from what I gathered when I was over there, resorts on the north cost have a higher chance of encountering choppier (is that a word?) water due to being on the Atlantic side, east and south sides are supposedly the calmer Caribbean side.

The water and beach when we were there was just unreal (I'm not a frequent traveller) but this was the whitest beach and clearest beautiful blue water I have ever encountered.

Ooh, who could I get to have the kids for a week....

I stayed there last April and it was horrendous when the locals came. 100s of them. No where to eat in the restaurant. No where to sit by the pool. You would think there would be an area for just the guests from abroad in the restaurant. The place was dirty. I wished we paid the extra and gone to the Iberostar. I def wouldn't go back. I am also very suprised we expected more from a company like Riu

Saw some canny deals to Mexico from Newcastle last week when we booked - 2 weeks at the Riu Tequila within walking distance of Playa del Carmen for £1080, leaving June 12th with Thomson (would avoid Thomas Cook like the plague - frequent detours on the return leg to a different airport and bussed to your intended destination, smaller than average legroom). I would assume just as good details to be had from the major airports. Have been to the Riu Tequila and Riu Mexico palace, and although the Palace was nicer, it wasn't £600pp nicer (the current price difference between the 2), so we've gone for the Tequila and maybe for a change we'll cash in our Riu points and upgrade to the Palace for our 2nd week. Lots of shopping to be had in Playa and it's handy not having a sizeable taxi fare to get there.

Do you people not get it ??? Stacey works really hard to post things people would find useful , I'm sure she does not have time to cater to every individual requests she received but yet it doesn't stop people from being so ignorant to think she is a personal travel agent !!!

Please give her a break as she is far too polite to say "no leave me alone" And please apprecite her for what she actually contributes

No.
The 3rd pic of the "lighthouse" is from the Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus.
Fantastic hotel and thoroughly recommended.
I want to return but have been put off by these horror stories of locals being allowed into the hotels and ruining it for the paying guests.
When did all this start?
Must admit it's been a few years since i stayed at the Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus and it never used to happen.
Seems a shame this has started happening.

I visited Riu Mambo (One of three Bahia Maimon hotels) in 2006. At that time I remember reading on tripadvisor about the locals arriving at the weekends but I'm not sure if this was just for a couple of weekends every year or more frequently than that. Either way, I didn't see any.

These tripadvisor reviews show what was going on where I was there. I will never return.
