40 inch Sharp Full HD LED TV £199 @ Tesco

This seems like a good price for a 40 inch Full HD TV from a known brand. Seems to be an older model but I don't need the smart tv features.

I was looking for a 32 inch second TV but couldn't find full hd for under £200, so went ahead with this one. IT has 3 HDMI ports, it has USB ports, so tick all boxes for me.

Epic mismatch - if you listen very carefully you'll be able to hear the Blu Ray player weeping.

Sharp isn't Sharp anymore, this is a Vestel set, so the same as Bush and the Supermarket brands.

It won't impress in any particular area, but quite cheap for it's size. I was 'lucky' enough to bag one of the 49" Smart models last Black Friday for the same price (£199, though £149 in the end as I got £50 back because I complained about how poor it was). I gave it away as a Christmas gift, but still see it in action regularly, it's 'meh' at best.

As is often the case with large retailers, the product number is unique. Hard to find reliable reviews.

It seems that UMC make the Sharp TV's now- not sure whether that's any better than Vestel though!

Sorry mate, I think it is UMC now as you come to say, but I see no harm in grouping them together

I got a 49 inch one for the bedroom last year. It's not too bad for the price, but not recommended for a main tv. The software is buggy as hell, takes forever to warm up and respond to the commands and the inbuilt YouTube app constantly crashes. The remote is RF so not compatible with any of my harmony remotes. That said I got lucky with a pretty decent panel with no DSE or light bleed. It is also very light so can be wall mounted in a downwards angle ideal for my bedroom. I also like the screen off button so I can listen to the tv whilst dropping off to sleep.

... oh and like the comment above, it's not an known brand but UMC. Certainly not what was Sharp. I think UMC made swisstec tvs which were sold in makro and had something to do with Sky if i remember correctly. (My 1st LCD t v ... and thats quite dire too).

Yeah it's not like UMC is better than Vestel or vice versa... both are bottom of the range budget manufacturers

I would say (from multiple 1st hand experience of both) that the UMC sets are marginally better than the Vestel although the Vestels are marginally better looking!

Either way, one thing this definitely isn't is a Sharp!!

Poor build quality though at least Tesco have some idea of how the Sale of Goods Act /Consumer Act works. I received £120 payment towards repairing a 2.5 year old (Panasonic plasma) TV after sending a Panasonic service bulletin I found acknowledging the fault.

Bought a UMC made Blaupunkt for a relative few years back. Had a minor issue with it, which Tesco offered a full no quibble refund for

Yeah, and the power cable is quite a deep black too.

Go on fleabay and buy an old pioneer plasma or panny plasma for less money than this.

Actually Sharp acquired a majority stake in UMC in February this year so these do now have something to do with Sharp.

Sharp are also now majority owned by the manufacturing giant Foxconn, so don't be surprised if they become a player outside of the ultra-budget market again.

It's probably a bit soon for all these changes to have had a big effect on models on shelves though.

Hmmm..thanks for that info! Very useful to know. Had Sharp made TVs, HiFis, VCRs back in the day - superb.

If they can get back to their former glory, that would be great for this industry

Now you're talking!

Anybody know what size VESA mount this tv has, and if so can anybody recommend a cheap price (flat against the wall) bracket?

Yeah I read that, amazing, who would have thought that allowing your good brand name to be used on low cost budget products might affect your brand name!?! These companies must employ idiots to come up with those brainwaves!

I wonder if Toshiba will change their mind once Vestel thoroughly ruins their brand image as well?

I paid £199 for Sharp 49 inch from Tesco. First TV failed at the same day. They sent me another one. Smart options it is a joke. Colours far away from Samsung or LG. Media player can not read any file from usb. Allways freeze should switch off from mains and reaction to remote control press take ages. Just happy with price 49 inch - £199 but vever buy Sharp again. 1 star from 10

Thanks, at least I know it's not just me with a 'faulty tv. I use a fire tv stick and a spare BT tv box attached to mine. Thus effectively using it as a monitor cause the inbuilt os is so dire. I certainly would have sent it back if it weren't for the otherwise excellent screen uniformity (albeit washed out) and the screen off function. For the bedroom it's fine. Ps I also currently have 3 samsung and 4 LG tv's (2 top range), so it's not like I don't know better lol.

Could you expand on what you mean by 'dire inbuilt os'? do you mean controlling day to day watching normal TV?

I think he means it cannot display straight lines properly.

We got the 43” version a month ago at £249 for the daughters bedroom not seen her since so can only imagine it’s not to bad.

Kinda went over my head too. I did post a lengthy reply to your Q on my phone then accidently deleted it before I posted. I couldn't face retyping it on my phone so I'll do it later tonight via laptop.
