Awful deal by any standard.

ebay.co.uk/itm…904
if you really want an 11year old laptop

However, for the same sort of money as this you can get
ebay.co.uk/itm…b85
X200 which is substantially newer

ebay.co.uk/itm…771
X200s which is again also much newer and less money

ebay.co.uk/itm…850
T61 which is slightly older than the above 2 recommendations but it's the same range as this deal.

rectech.co.uk/6,4…tml
Dell E6400 also much newer and cheaper and as with all my recommendations much faster

Sorry but this is a non deal and entirely profiteering by the retailer, I've even seem more modern T400's for not much more money. These machines are much too old even being grade "A", as I said 11 years old, technology has moved on a very long way in that time, these were good machines in their day but very . 40gb for windows 7 is also going to prove amusing very quickly as W7 often likes to swallow drive space, I've seen well over 15gb being reported on a regular basis and IDE drives are now harder to source and also rather expensive for what you get.

be careful folks.

original battery on quite an old machine. only 1GB ram on windows 7 so it's going to be slooooooow,

seems rather expensive for this machine too.

on the plus side, I think these were still made by IBM back then.

Also just read the actual text of the site and now I will pick it apart because this is blatant misselling of the product.

Introducing the stunning refurbished IBM Thinkpad T42 laptop.

Stunning? Thinkpad, what planet do these people exist on? Utilitarian is about as good as I can describe a thinkpad prior to 2010 and even after that it's a hard push to use that adjective.

Remains to be seen if they are fantastic.

With a powerful Intel Centrino 1.73Ghz processor

It wasn't powerful 11 years ago and it certainly aint going to be that now. Even the cheap dell laptop deal is a good deal faster than this and that's a new laptop that's not very good.

and 1.0GB of RAM,

W7 on 1gb of RAM. Yes this will be driving you mad in a matter of hours. I'm using a 1/3 of this machines RAM just running a session of firefox and a few tabs open. W7 will work but it's not a very good experience.

this high-performance laptop

Did I miss the mention of an i7 or Bulldozer CPU upgrade that has been made to this? This was never high performance when new.

I think that's the first entirely truthful statement so far.

Err on my web browsing laptop I've got 41gb in my downloads folder and I don't use this machine for much else other than reading the news online and sitting on reddit. 40gb was never a lot of storage space and IIRC was the base level storage this laptop would have been offered with.

Not exactly a feature but an expectation that most people have had for about 10 years now from a laptop.

With a brand new battery included,

£10 on ebay and probably a massive discount they got on consumer prices for these

all you have to do is turn it on and it’s ready to go.

Sadly I can't moan at this as it's true of every working laptop I've ever serviced.

When? In 2008? As they have not been worth that for some time considerable time. The newer versions are available for the same or even less money as outlined above.

Someone worked out how to install Lenovo update then and put the package in a box afterwards.

Barely any use for work outside of office tasks and will be slow at that and you won't have got any value for money. Also are laptops not already a travel companion by virtue of being a laptop?

Lot of time on your hands...?

Antique, almost.

Also vastly cheaper on Ebay.

This has to be the worst value laptop deal I've seen on here in a long time. I own a T43 with 2gb RAM and its not up to much with its single core CPU but still better than this. Anyone who buys one of these has been ripped off by the vendor, who is spouting nonsense marketing blurb.

Saved by the bell. Or should I say you guys. Was going to order from the E.Mail bespoke sent me but was out of stock. So followed one of the links. Astec123 listed and found a better machine for less money. Good enough for a silver surfer like me. CHEERS.

I own t41p, t61 and a more recent Lenovo.

YOU CANNOT FIT AN SSD - it's IDE, NOT SATA - wrong interface it physically won't plug in!

Bag of S

My company had these machines and they are a solid machine with few problems, however the print wears off the key tops on frequently used keys which can be frustrating if you are a hunt and peck typist. It happened to loads of them used by both men and women, so probably not due to hand lotion.

As other people above said - this is a legendary laptop and fantastic in its day but way obsolete now. I can't think of a reason to go for this.

The last decent IBM Thinkpad IMHO, we had loads of these at work a decade or so ago and they lasted well, the T43s we replaced them with were a pile of crap, I don't think any lasted their 3 year business lifetime without major repairs.

No way would I pay over 100 quid for a T42 in 2014 though.

The t61 was the last good lenovo/ibm latop IMO
Even had 4:3 rather than the modern short screen

I've got no direct experience of the Lenovo Thinkpads other than the second hand x201 I bought a while back, which seems well designed (at least it's 16:10 screen not 16:9) and no hassles with it so far, touch wood.
