now only 8 times the cost of the canon 50mm f1.8! What a bargain. i own an fe camera but im not going to be tempted by these lenses until they only slightly expensive as hell. unfortunately theyre still mega stupid retarded insanity expensive. even with this 100 quid off.

the comparable quality canon 50mm lens is the 50 1.2 which is almost £1000. Nikon 58mm 1.4 is over £1000. I feel like you're not really the target market for this sort of camera/lens.

all 50mm lenses are good. all f1.8 versions are better than f1.4 and they are better than f1.2 versions and so on. you can't compare one to another as the only benefit of a wiser aperture is better subject isolation / a shallower depth of field. all 50mm f1.8 lenses are optically amazing as they are easy as hell to make and thus this lens is outright insanely overpriced. its not even a real zeiss lens. the zeiss otus range is more expensive but at least they are worth it. this lens just exists to make some money back from the underpriced Sony A7 range of bodies. its pretty obvious.

Reviews don't support your opinion. dpreview.com/len…1-8

"The 55mm F1.8 lives up to its Carl Zeiss branding, returning truly superb test results on the Alpha 7R. It's extremely sharp, shows little chromatic aberration or distortion, and has entirely acceptable levels of vignetting. In fact it comes very close indeed to the astounding (but $4000) Zeiss Otus 55mm F1.4."

"From the lab test results, the Sony FE 55mm F1.8 ZA is quite simply one of the sharpest lenses we've seen. It's clearly been designed with the demands of modern high resolution sensors in mind, and is easily a match for the currently class-leading resolution of the Alpha 7R. It's impossible to ignore its price, but in this case, there's a pretty good argument that you get what you pay for.

"Compared to the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II or Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G, the Sony is quite simply in a different class in terms of wide-open sharpness."

Samples do.
